Open RNY Incisions - Keep them covered?

I realize all surgeons a different. Mine covered my incisions with sterie strips when I left the hospital and said they would fall off in about a week. After that I could leave they uncovered. Well the sterie strips came - thank goodness, they were getting icky. My incisions aren't infected or anything, they look fine I guess, but I feel like they should have some neosporan and at least a bandaid. What did your doctors have you do?

I had a lap RNY on Aug. 24, but my doctor left the staples in until just yesterday at my two-week check-up. They didn't cover them, just told me to wash them with antibacterial soap and pat dry. Now that the staples are out, I still wash the area twice a day and spray Bactine on the incisions, which seem to be healing nicely. The Bactine was my own idea. My doctor said I don't have to put anything on them, but if it makes me feel better, to go ahead and put the Bactine on.

Hi, I had an open RNY on the 8/03/05 and the following day the surgen took the dressing off and left it uncovered, about 10 days after they took out the staples and put on those sterie stips and yes they do get a little funky. I was told to wash around the incision with soap and water and just let the water run over it. The strips came off then I started to oooz from three spots of my incision, the Dr. looked at it and cleaned them out, it felt like he was elbow deep swabing around, unplesent more than pain.and now I'm all healed up. But keep that gooey stuff from hardening up over the incision and make sure that it drains clear or a little yellow if it turns green or any other funky color get to your Dr. Bob
