I'm 3 1/2 weeks out and eating pureed diet. Can I eat fat free refried beans with cheese? When can we add a low fat flour tortilla?

I met with my nutrionist yesterday and she said that refried beans are an excellent choice for protein. And you can even add some cheese! So had this for supper last night and it was just delightful!

Hey Janice, I am 2 1/2 post-op and love refried beans! Do try to get the fat free kind. Are you aloud crackers? I take 2-3 pieces of melba toast (garlic flavor) and put microwaved FF refried beans, cheddar cheese, and FF sour cream on them and they are great! I don't think we can have the tortilla yet b/c they are soft and get gummy. The only reason I can have melba toast is b/c it is toasted and doesn't get gummy. Hope this helps. -Lynn Lap RNY 8-16-05 297/277/150

The best person to ask would of course be your doctor or nutrionist if your program has one. I never had to do the pureed diet - I went straight from clear liquids to soft protiens that included fat free/low fat refried beans, because as noted, they're a great source of protein. Tortillas (or any other straight processed carb) will be months away for me, not so much because of the gumminess, but because for my program, we get soft proteins for 6 weeks, reg. proteins (possibibly some veggies/fruit) for another 6 weeks or so, then maybe I'll get to eat pasta and breads. I have found the differences in our programs online to just be amazing! Dawn
