Diareha (sp)
I don't think I spelled that right, but I was wondering if any of you are experiencing this problem? I am only 4 days out and can't seem to stop with the diareaha problem. I'm having trouble getting in any protein drinks because it seems to make it worse. I'm sure I'm not getting in enough liquids either.
Also, it is a little hard with the rest of the family eating and smelling how good it smells. Especially when I can only have liquids.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I had problems for about the first week, but then it settled down and everything is fine. If you keep having problems, be sure and call your doctor. Keep drinking as much as you can so you don't get dehydrated.
I found, for me, the best thing for helping when family food smells great was Knorr's Tomato Basil soup. Put it through a sieve (sp) to get out the herbs, but it smells like spaghetti sauce almost and tastes great! Also a nice change from all the "sweet" liquids, it really tastes like you're having something!
Hey Gianna,
That's weird, I started to have diarreha on my 4th day post-op! I had it for about 5 days and then it started to ease off and now I just go once a day, lol. I was going like 7-10 times a day and I hated it! I was getting nervous and didn't know if it was normal, but it is. My doctor told me that the first week or two you are consuming mainly all liquids so liquid in, liquid out. Plus your body is kinda in shock and is adjusting. Don't worry, this too shall pass. Although, if it continues for a long period of time, you probably should call your surgeon. Try to get your protein in. I thought it was b/c of the protein too, but it wasn't. Hope this helps!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with the diarrhea problem. I've been paying close attention to what seems to trigger it, because I haven't had it every day. Check to see if the sugar free items you are eating are sweetened with Splenda (sucralose). It causes diarrhea in many people. Even a bite of the pre-made Jello sugar free pudding (which containes sucralose) sends me running to the bathroom. Their sugar-free pudding mix in the box doesn't contain sucralose, and doesn't bother me. Also, if you are lactose intolerant, be sure to use Lactaid or soy milk. Lactaid fat free milk tastes just like regular milk to me, and sure saves a lot of problems. And, finally, read the literature that comes with your medication. Some meds can cause diarrhea. For me, my potassium supplement and a drug called Actigall (sp?) [a med to help prevent gall stones] both can cause diarrhea for the first week or so while your body adjusts.
One of my biggest fears before surgery was having to deal with diarrhea. In my job, I can't just bolt for the bathroom. So, I know I won't eat right if it means everything is going to go straight through me. I know I am going to have to be very careful with what I do eat, and just hope this passes.
Gianna,
I was also having the same problem until yesterday. I agree with the previous post that Splenda (sucralose) had a lot to do with it. I cut out all the sugar-free ice pops, etc and felt better within the day. I also started using chewable lactaid tablets with anything that had dairy (I am lactose intolerant) and I think that helped a lot too! Sorry about the sore behind, but I'm right there with you. I still have boughts of it, but not 10x a day like I was having!
