Hi Terri - My husband is diabetic. His surgery was 8/9/05. He had to bring his blood sugars down before surgery. I believe most of it has to do with the healing process. Just keep fighting to get your sugars down. My husband we from 3 to 4 injection daily to oral insulin from the hospital. They want him to keep it at 120 now. Best Wishes - Kari

Terri - I'm diabetic and had my surgery on August 16th. I was taking 35 units of Lantus prior to surgery. Plus a sliding scale of Humalog during the day. I'm down to 20 units of Lantus at night and very little of Humalog during the day. I'm checking my BS every couple of hours so that I don't have a low blood sugar - fearful of how to treat it. A couple of mornings of woken up with a BS in the 50's or 60's. Since I was on fluids I had apple juice diluted with 3 parts of water and sipped on that until BS returned to normal. I think the main thing ofr us is to not panic and check often. Good Luck. From another Terri

Hi Terri, Had RNY Aug 10, I fasted 3 days before surgery and that helped get the sugars down plus oral meds. I'm almost 3 weeks post op and have been totaly off all insulin and oral meds. My Dr. pronounced me cured of diabetes, there is hope. I Keep testing though Because I know my body and diet are going through all kinds of changes. Ask your Dr. what you' re going to be eating after surgery and start on it before, see if it makes any difference in blood sugar levels. kara
