Topic: RE: peripheral neuropathy??
Thanks for the replies. My wls surgeons were lousy. No aftercare at all. Which is not what I was led to believe beforehand. They almost killed me in surgery. I've had a terrible time from day one after wls. I couldn't eat or drink anything for 4 months. I had out of control nausea and vomiting. I was hospitalized 13 times between Aug 17 and Thanksgiving for dehydration and low potassium. I developed vertigo in eary December, then kidney stones a week later. I was told that was from the dehydration. Right before the vertigo I was dropped at the hosptial and broke my tailbone. Then a week after Christmas I went for an MRI to try and see what the problem was with walking. They discovered a herniated disk and thought maybe that was the culprit so I had that repaired on Jan 19th. The incision just closed and healed this past weekend. I didn't think it would ever heal. Now I'm back to square one on the walking so I truly appreciate your input. I will get my B levels tested ASAP. I've been taking them but maybe not enough. I just started taking the Tr Vita. Has anyone else tried these?
Thanks
Tracy

Are you taking your B vitamins? Have you been getting your levels checked? B12 and B1 are critical to us as post ops. A similar thing happened to a lady in my support group who had a B12 deficiancy. She began B12 injections in 7/04 and was walking again without a walker by 12/04. Please have your B12 and B1 levels checked!!! Good luck.

After I lost 100 pounds, I am down 110 lbs., I decided to finally go shopping! I have discovered that I love shopping again! I refused to buy clothes for so long due to my weight that I have forgotten how much I used to enjoy it. So my new goal is to go every time I get paid, once a month, and buy me something new to help replenish my wardrobe! Plus I cut my hair short, something I never would have done before! Susan

Are you getting your B-12 shots regularly? My mother had WLS in 1980 and did not keep up with her B-12 injections. She now suffers from neuropathy and wishes she had taken the shots and the B-12 (and other) vitamins when she first began her journey.
Check with your surgeon or regular doctor to get a complete CBC and see what your numbers are. You can take too much B-12, but it is rare. Please! If you are not already getting your regular B-12 injections, do it soon!
Hope you're feeling better soon.

Here's a question for you all:
What have you done or what do you plan to do to celebrate big milestones (such as getting under 200/300 or hitting the century mark or getting to goal)?
I have two pounds to go to the Century Club. When I get there, I plan to go get a full makeover at a luxury spa to reward myself.
When I get to goal, I hope to get my teeth professionally whitened and get my rings resized.
It was a big deal when I got under 200 for the first time in years, but I never did anything particularly special for it even though I planned to. I was going to get contacts and just never got around to it. I still plan to get them at some point. My vision is changing with my weight loss, and my glasses are too loose on my head. They slip down all the time.
All my celebrations/rewards have to do with improving my appearance. I really didn't care very much about how I looked when I was 282 lbs. Now I feel like a butterfly emerging, and I enjoy the idea of presenting my best self to the world.
So, what have YOU done or will you do to celebrate milestones? I'm just curious and thought it would be fun to ask.

Well luckily my husband works for a huge company (Landmark Comunications) so they have about 15 different insurance options.
I work for a small company so we only have two insurance options. HMO and PPO. The HMO option looked at me like I was crazy when I requested a referal. They wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
Of course, I found this out in July 2003 and Open enrollment was MAY! So If I had known in March 2003 that my insurance didn't cover it, I could have switched and had surgery in 2003. But I didn't.
My insurance will cover the RNY GB until we renew out policy on May1, after that they will not cover it. Unfortunately, my husband waits until MARCH to tell me he wants to pursue it! So we are going to run out of time. However, I am hoping they will aprrove it before May 1 and go ahead and pay. If they won't, then we will have to research options with my husband's employer. Right now he is on the POS Plan from Cigna I think. Its $6.64 a paycheck just for him. Where he works its mandatory to at least carry that coverage, even though he explained he didn't need it because he was on my plan and the copays are cheaper. I need to get his insurance card and make some phone calls and see what they cover.
Maybe at least with him having two insurance plans, we won't have to pay as much for his as we did mine.
I knew I was going to Have a $300 hospital copay, but somehow my insurance avoided $1400 in other charges and I ended up with a $1700 bill when I was expecting a $300 bill.
Even though it was more expensive than what we budgeted for, Even though the supplements have cost a fortune, and buying all of the replacement clothes has been a HUGE cost,
I would do it over in a minute.
I finally have a life. I can go and do whatever I want. I'm not tired, I work out all the time, and I am NEVER uncomfortable.
I think my husband sees how my life has improved and he wants in. He doesn't want me to be able to go to theme parks and fit on the rides and him not be able to go.

Woooooo-Hooooooo! Congratulations to you, Leland! How wonderful to have lost more than 100 lbs since your highest and 100 since surgery!!!
As for your hubby--good luck to him! I'm sure you've been an inspiration to him. You never know about the insurance. I had the cheapest insurance my employer offered when I had surgery, and they covered it. I did have to pay quite a bit out of pocket, but I didn't mind. It was still cheaper in the long run than paying those horrendous premiums for months or years on end.
