This is a good question! I think for me, the turning point was that I was so tired to going on diets, being successful at losing the weight, buying a new wardrobe----only to go back to my old eating habits and gaining the weight back, plus more. I went through a terrible bout with depression and infertility, and all those excuses were just that----excuses for eating. I didn't exercise, and the combination was critical for me becoming so obese. My health got poor. I saw myself going down the same path that my mother had traveled. WLS was there for her in 1980 (albeit was a different type), and I believe it saved her life. WLS wasn't my first option, I tried other diets (again), but I knew it would have to be the tool that would change things permanently for me. I hope others will answer this question, because I am curious too. ~Laura

OK, now that the celebrations have cooled down. We all enjoyed a great anniversary month, I would like to ask a new question. I know many of have a complete profile, and many of us don't. I would like to ask a deep question. What was the turning point that made you and I obese? What made us lose control of our weight. It has been 2 years since our surgery. We all have a better understanding of ourselves. Since I would love to hear from all of you, I will give my experiences as a reply. Hope to hear from all of you. Take care.

Laura, I can't stop lauphing every time I think of who you said I looked like. Don't get me wrong, I always watched the TV show Miami Vice. I loved the way Edward James Olmos came out. He was always so cool. It is funny because I have never ever heard that in my life. I still like the comparrison and the compliments. To return the compliment, you look like an intelligent, beautiful, suffisticated woman in the box picture. Plus a great smile. I am going to work in trying to see myself different. I can't even say the word. Once again, thanks for the compliment and take care.

Oh, I am so happy to see your face in the "block," as I've come to think of it. You really are very handsome, so I hope you are starting to see yourself in the same way that we do. Naturally, we didn't know you before your surgery, so we've only known you as being skinny! Isn't that funny? I continue to be amazed at how small my clothes are when I am folding laundry. Several times I have almost placed things in with the kids' laundry....just because I'm shrinking as they are growing. My daughter and I wear some of the same t-shirts now! Well.....I am so happy to finally see your face looking back at all of us August folks! When you feel like it, get your beautiful children to snap some new photos of you (by yourself). I think you'll be very surprised at how slim and handsome you really are. I know how happy your kids are that you have come so far. OK! I just remembered who you remind me of, Louis! You remind me of a younger version of actor Edward James Olmos. Ladies, do you agree with me? He's so handsome! I remember when he played Lt. Castillo on Miami Vice in the 1980's. ~Laura

Hello everyone, I finally have some pictures. The picture at 340 Lbs. was the last picture I have taken alone. I know I told some members I would make it a Summer project and buy a camera. I couldn't do it. The 2 pictures with my kids were taken by a family member. I continue having a hard time taking a picture. My Winter project is to take a picture of myself alone. I feel nervous seeing my face on my replys. Well, thanks for listening to me and I hope they look OK. Take care.

Topic: RE: NE considering plastic surgery these days?
I had RNY surgery two years ago yesterday. On 11/29 I had a tummy tummy. I absolutely love the results. It was the best thing I could have done for myself. Unfortunately, eight days following surgery I developed a blood clot from the calf to my groin. Really scared me cuz it is the second blood clot I have had. It had been years (22 to be exact) since my first blood clot. I knew it the minute I awoke and called the Drs. office. Already had an appt. for that afternoon so I just elevated my leg and try to be as immobile as possible. After the dobler study it was confirmed, that I did indeed have another blood clot. So now I am on coumadine for life. I can live with that. no complications or side affects and it will pretty much eliminate any chance of having another clot. Did a genetic testing and found that I have the gene that is prone to blood clots, heart attacks and stroke. Yikes, good thing I didn't know about it before my surgery. Anyway-back to the tummy tuck. I love it. It was basically painless. I've had two caesarans and the pain was pretty much the same. Had to walk bent over for 2-1/2 weeks and slept in a recliner for 30 days. Returned to normal exercise after 8 weeks. It is wonderful. course, it is like getting a new couch and after two weeks you decide that the walls need painted and the floors carpeted. lol But, alas, no more surgeries for me. I would love to have my thighs done and a breast lift. I loved my surgeon, Dr. Ronald Hollins (Omaha, NE). He was wonderful and the perfect surgeon for me. I visited two before I decided which one I wanted to go with. It was self pay, but worth every penny. Good luck to you.

Oh, sushi is wonderful. It is not (as some people think) "raw fish." Sushi is rather a style of rolling a special type of sticky rice in with vegetables, meats and spices....all rolled together into a long roll (usually inside of a seaweed wrap) and then sliced across into bite-sized pieces. The presentation is that you can see everything inside of each bite you take. I like my sushi with cooked shrimp or fish or just vegetarian. I can't eat too much of it, though, because of the rice. It fills me up fast! Merlot is like a dry version of a Cabernet Sauvignon (red wine.) I like merlot because it is not as sweet and it seems to be a little thicker. One glass usually satisfies me. There are so many varieties on the market; it is easy to want to try them all. I usually keep some at my house, but I rarely drink at home. When I go out to eat steak, that's when I usually order a glass. That's the cooking show for now! Good luck trying some of these things. You're not too far away from Chinatown in LA, right? Why not ask a friend you know (who might be of Asian descent) to take you out for a "real" Oriental meal....and teach you some of the ins-and-outs of REAL Oriental food! You'd be surprised at all the variety that is available! Some of it is fantastic!!! Most of it is very healthy too. Remember, sushi is Japanese, not Chinese. But, you can sometimes find it at a Chinese restaurant. ~Laura
