Hello all i have heard a million different reasons why we shouldn't eat and drink at the same time (fills the pouch so you can't get enough food, moves the food through too quickly, stretches the pouch and on and on and on....)and was wondering if anyone out there could give me the REAL reason once and for all! This is a real problem for me, as i find myself literally going NUTS for a drink when i am eating... sometimes i'd rather have my water than finish my plate... lol Thanks Laurie 8/18/04 RNY 95 pounds lost

My Dr. says most people start drinking some with meals, but you are better off waiting 45 minutes, because you want to get all the nourishment out of what you eat (protien) I can't eat and drink it makes me sick, plus I promised myself I was going to do what my dr. says, I want to be as healthy as I possibly can. Just listen to your Dr.

Those are the reasons I've heard...for myself...once I've eaten...there just isn't the room in my pouch and the few occasions I've forgotten and taken a drink...it hurts me...so that's the main reason why I don't drink with my meals. Kristy 254/146/140

Laurie: Sounds like there isn't only one reason! I don't like to drink with meals because I get hungrier again earlier. I don't know the *real* reason, but it seems like my food goes through quicker when I drink. Having said that, I don't think a little sip here and there is going to make that big of a difference. My doc says it's because the liquid washes food through the pouch too quickly and we are then able to eat more than we ought to. It's true--I tend to drink with meals at restaurants, and I'm able to eat MUCH more of my meal when I drink at the same time. I'm also hungry again sooner than usual after the meal is over. So, basically, it takes away the benefit of the size restriction of the pouch. ---- Leslie -108

same here basically. It is physically impossible to eat and drink for me. I will take sip at the end to rinse my teeth out but that's about it. Like everyone else said you will not feel the fullness long enough if you drink and eat at the same time. I say the reasons you listed are the real reasons.

Some time back Dx or some other knowledgeable post op wrote about the concept of water loading well before you have your meal. 1hr or 45 minutes before your meal drink a lot of water because if you don't the salt in your meal will demand water later. Try it and see if it helps. Thelma
