Our program requires that patients stop drinking 30 minutes before they are going to eat and then wait 45 minutes to an hour to eat again after drinking.
I have been doing pretty good following this. I do wait 45 minutes after I eat to drink again (most of the time...I'm not perfect). I have a hard time with having to stop drinking 30 minutes before the meal. I don't know why, but this trips me up. I consider the after part more important anyway, as the sole purpose was not to push the food out of the pouch too fast. I never was too clear on the reasons we had to wait 30 minutes to eat after drinking. Not to say that I have to undersatnd every rule in order to abide by it, as I take my post-op diet stuff seriously, but this never really did make sense to me.
Once in awhile I will sip with a meal but generally, I do my best to stick to the 45 minutes. I need all the protein I can get and the thought of it just washing out of my pouch because of water is enough of a deterrant for me.
Hugs,
Denise
