About 3 weeks ago my doctor advised me to eat more carbs in order to get my ketosis in check. I was nauseated all the time and couldn't eat anything with out vomiting. I also developed thrush, which made the nausea even worse. Since I began eating "more" carbs ("more" for me means one or two crackers with cheese, a spoonful of mashed potatoes or such at a time), my weight loss ha**** the breaks. Still eating small meals and getting in lots of fluids (water mostly, with some diet snapple for kicks). Has anyone else had initial quick weight loss then had it stop suddenly for a while? Had my Open Proximal RNY on August 18th and have lost 53 lbs. Have lost about 4 lbs in the last 2 weeks. Brian

Hi Brian my dieticia told me that when we start eating carbs we go into a plateau until our bodies get used to it, then its back to losing like before. i hope this helps Linda

Weeks 3 and 4 I lost nothing, the scale even went up 7 pounds. Suddenly in week 5 the weight started dropping again. They say its normal to plateau at this stage. Patty

Brian, I lost a big chunk in the first two weeks then plateaued. I think your body needs to catch up w/ the numbers. I've noticed this is the way I lose. Lose a chunk, plateau, lose a bit, plateau. Maybe that's the way your body loses too. ~barb

Brian, I'm right there with you. My surgery was on August 16th. I have been up and down the same 5 lbs for the last 3 weeks. I'm so frustrated! I decided to go back to the full liquid faze of the diet for a few days and see how that goes. I'm pumping up on the protein big time. I'm really hoping that helps! Brian: I lost real good for about 5 weeks, then I had a 2 week plateau. Your body needs a plateau to "catch up" with your pounds lost. During this time you will notice your clothing getting loose and your rolls getting smaller. Hang in there - you will begin losing again. Cyndi Lap RNY / 08.16.2004 306 / 257.5 / 165

I've had the same experience as everyone else who's posted, except I only seem to get one good "losing week" per month so far. The rest is just a 2-3 pounds a week or nothing at all. But, boy, this month's losing week was a doozy!--almost 10 lbs in one week! Then, of course, I sat there for several days with no downward movement. It's all good, though. Something positive is happening weight-wise for the first time in years! But follow your doc's advice about the carbs without fear. You almost can't help but lose at this point. To prove it to yourself, go to Bruce Underwood's site at http://www.thinnerself.com/files/calculator.htm and put in your current weight, height, etc. When you click the "Calculate" button, look on the bottom right in the grey bar--you'll see how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. If you're like me, you're taking in FAR less than this amount these days. Plain ol' math dictates that you will continue to lose as long as you stay below this number. Note, though, that the number changes and gets lower as you lose--that's why it's so hard to take off the last few pounds when you start to approach your goal weight. It'll be very hard to take in fewer calories than it takes to maintain your skinny self. Keep up the great work, Brian!!!! You'll start losing again soon. Do you measure yourself? Many men don't. But it's a great way to see some "action" when the scale's not doing its thing. When I'm not losing pounds, I've noticed I still lose inches. Very gratifying. ---- Leslie 5'3" 282/231/135 (51 down, 96 to go!)

Yes! I hit a plateau after about 5 weeks. It lasted at least 2 long weeks, and although I kept working out, the pounds were not coming off. But, I "felt" smaller, and I knew I was losing inches. Keep on eating for fuel. I like the Carnation Instant Breakfast chocolate drinks in the (square) "can." Check in the cereal aisle of your grocery store. Get the ones that are in the blue container (sugar free.) They taste great, have enough calories to keep you burning, and don't have the high fat/high sugar that causes "dumping." Plus, the benefit is that they have 15 protein grams per "can!" For fuel, try a pack of peanut butter crackers (you know, the little 6-pack crackers?) Read the label for the protein grams. Choose wisely. Keep your hair on your scalp! Eat your protein! But......back to the plateau. After about two weeks of not losing but a pound or two....I'm back to losing about 4 - 5 pounds a week again. It will slow down again, I am sure of it! I'll just keep doing what I've been doing, though....try to keep it coming off! Don't give up! You're doing great! YOU ARE NOT ALONE! All of us are experiencing ups and downs!
