Hi Tracy, Even immediately after surgery I was able to have decaf coffee and tea. Couldn't drink much, but wasn't restricted. What does your surgeon/dietician say?

Tracy - I drank decaf coffee within a few days of surgery, but found it didn't taste right anymore. I found warm decaf tea a better alternative for me. It helps to settle my little pouch when it yells at me. Good luck...

My Dr. (Dr. Norbert Richardson) was ok with coffee as long as it was Decaf. All I have in the house is regular so I haven't had any either. ARGH!!!!!

well I must say I had a big head ake from the day of my surgery and it lasted 5 says! Then I thought why isnt me pain meds helping it!? Doh! I was having caffine withdraws. I WAS a big coffee drinker. Well I stared with about 4 oz. of coffee and boom no more pounding! So now every day I have a mug or two of the stuff...My surgion said it was ok in moderation. Call and ask if you want some!!!! ...............KIMW

Tracy: I quit the coffee when I quit smoking before surgery, because I associated the two and I knew it. (Quit Cold Turkey). However, I have been drinking A LOT of Decaf Tea (talking about literally having gone through 160 tea bags and I am only 6 weeks post). It is very calming to the pouch and a great way to get fluids in. That being the case, I am sure Decaf Coffee is also fine...have to avoid the Caffeine because of the extreme amount of dehydration you can get from it. Although some surgeons may say it's ok in moderation...and it probably is, personally I don't want to have to drink even MORE water (or in my case Propel and hot tea) to compensate for the Caffeine. I figure, I gave it up, may as well leave it where it is. ;) Good luck!

Hi Tracy, My dietician was okay with decaf right after surgery. I did the decaf route for awhile and then went back to regular coffee. I think the biggest concern with caffiene is that it is an appetite stimulant; makes you hungry. If you are aware of this and won't indulge when feeling hungry, I say go for it. In my opinion, anything is okay in mederation. I am certainly not telling you to go against your surgeon's plan, and I am sure my dietician would not be happy to know that I have one cup of regular coffee a day. But I needed a pick me up in the morning. Hugs, Denise

My surgeon must be very lenient because he never restricted coffee. But to keep myself from getting dehydrated, for every cup of coffee, I drink two cups of water. ...
