WHY AM I SO WEAK?

Sept. 11, 2004, marked one month since my surgery. I'm following all the instructions. It is hard to get 64 oz. of water down a day. I'm averaging about 50 oz. + I have three meals a day. The rest of the time I'm sipping water or the protein drink. I use the vanilla flavor protein powder with just a touch of additional vanilla flavoring and it's not too bad. Not my favorite either. I try to get it down as soon as possible. I'm also up to walking 20 min. two times a day on my treadmill at 1.5 mph. My main problem is that I am still weak. I get up to do something and in just a few minutes, I need to sit down. It's not too bad if I can keep moving, like walking from place to place. However, if I have to stand still, within a few seconds I feel like my legs won't hold me up. My shoulders and arms feel like they weigh a ton and I want to sit down immediately. If I can't sit down, sometimes it will pass or ease up. But why do I feel like that to start with? I have to go back to work as a secretary for a large multi-track, year-round elementary school in a week. I'm wondering if I'll be able to get through the 8 hour day. Does anyone else have this problem? HELP! I see the Dr. Sept. 15.

Hi Barbara, I'm only 3 weeks out and the only times that I really feel weak is when I'm tired. Other than that, I feel that I'm gaining my strength back everyday. In the meantime, I would make sure that you discuss this with your doctor. Fortunately that's only a couple days away, but if you are really concerned about it, I wouldn't hesitate to call today. It seems like you are doing everything right and I don't believe that you are overdoing it, but that's just my opinion. Hope everything works out for you!! Shelly

Are you taking your iron and b-12 supplements?

Hi Barb, I did have that problem and my PCP gave me a B12 shot immediately. I feel like a new person, with lots of energy since I got it! As a matter of fact, I have been so weak, that he is making me get them every 2 weeks. I got a double dose today and a prescription for shots. Ask your PCP and see what they recommend. Denise

I'm sorry you're having such a bad time right now. I think part of it is your body trying to re-coup from all it's been through. I know water and protein are the biggest things... and I know it's hard to get them in during the day, but those may seriously help. Also, like mentioned above, B12 is VERY important. How are you sleeping? I found I need A LOT more sleep now than before.... Hope you feel better soon! Dawn
