Hi everyone I had my surgery on August 31, 2004. I'm sure like everyone else I'm getting really sick of liquids!! It seems like Dietitians and Doctors are all over the place with what they allow people to eat. Soooo, just out of curiosity what are you eating/drinking and when did you have your surgery? And have you tolerated your food/liquids? Surgery: August 31, 2004 What I'm eating/drinking: Sugar free popsicle's, SF pudding, Broth's, Cup of Soups, that lovely Jell-O, soupy mashed potato's, and Cream of Rice. I've tolerated everything well except one episode with Cream of Rice ... I could feel it stick because it was a little thick. And of course lot's and lot's of water. I pray that everyone is healing well & that we can all eat little bitty bites of NORMAL food soon. LOL Have a blessed day, Kay

I had open VBG on August 9th. I had my surgery early on a Monday morning, and did not have anything but ice until Wednesday morning. (NG tube came out Tues. night) On Wed. I was on clear liquids and went home Thursday morning on Full liquids (anything liquid at room temp.) At that time I ate mostly creamed soups, broth, jello, pudding, protein shakes, mashed potatoes, and frozen fruit bars. I tolerated everything well except for a yogurt smoothie that had too much sugar and gave me gas pains SO BAD!! The following Tuesday he told me I could start eating solid foods and to take small bites and chew well. He also said if you put a bite in your mouth and you even think you might be full that it is best to spit it out because there is some delay between your pouch and your brain. Now I eat pretty much everything. I am avoiding bread (even dry toast) because it takes up too much space, and I eat very small amounts of rice. (I'm afraid it will swell up). Last night was a real challenge...I went to a mexican restaurant with a friend. I ate off her dinner and had a little bit of rice, refried beans (these set in the pouch real well), and a dab of enchilada. I was freaking out that I would gain after having this but to my astonishment I lost another pound...of course that could be because I ate my lunch too fast and lost it soo thereafter. Best of luck to you....it's definitely a new adventure

I had my surgery Aug. 30th. The past 12 days have been liquids, protein shakes, sf jello, sf popsicles, diluted juice, and water. I use vanilla soy milk to make my protein shakes. I'm ready for something a little more solid. I can add cream of wheat, mashed pototoes, pureed soups, pudding, yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese next week. Healing well, I had the staples and drain removed on Thursday. I had lost 24 lbs and was so excited. I hope things are as well with you. Pat

Hello Friend! Well I had clear liquids the first week but I am now eating strained chunky soups, campbells cream soups and lipton cup of soups. I also eat potted meat, Rip-ums (american cheese strips by Kraft), light and lively yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, sf jello, sf pudding, sf fudgesicles, (yummy), corn beef hash, sf applesauce. I really enjoy the soups and get full after about a cup or less. With solid or semi solid foods I get full after 4 or five small bites. (thats why I like the soups better, I feel more like I ate a normal meal) I drink plenty of Crystal Light and Carb Options decaf tea. I am doing better and better everyday. On Friday, Sept 10th I went for my 10 day post op appt and lost 15 lbs!!! How are you doing Kay? Joy

Hello Kay, My Dr. seems to be very strict compared to others, my surgery was 8/26 and I am 17 days out. I was allowed lowfat low salt broth, sf jell-o, and diluted apple juice in the hosp. After my 1st appt. at 10 days, I am allowed to eat lowfat cottage cheesse, banana, watermelon, cantelope, blueberries, carrots, green beans, sweet potato, squash, peas (all fruits and veggies mushed fine), beans, oatmeal and cream of wheat, and egg whites. I am in no way allowed to have yolk, white potato, rice, white pasta, fried food, chips, gum, soda, seedy fruit, crackers, nuts, or alcohol. Everything must me low fat and low sugar. I mainly end up w/ my sf carnation instant breakfast(which seems the easiest) I drink alot of water and am allowed only one a day of crystal lite, sf kool-aid, or sf pop. Not a whole lot of choice. So even my soft food stage isn't that great. Natalie

Your doc seems too strict compared to everything I have read. Also-- is it good to eat all that fruit this early on? Bananas have a high fructose content. Protein should always be eaten first! I really don't see any protein listed. How does your doc expect you to get your protein in? Also, definitely no pop: sugar free or otherwise, unless you let it get flat first! The carbonation will cause problems in your pouch possibly expanding to the point of breaking your new sutures loose. It is not recommended to have soda until at least 6 mos out, preferably 12 months! Also, nothing wrong with Crystal Light as often as you would like! Just my 2 cents, I hope it helps. Joy 391/376/150

Chrissy: I would think mac and cheese, noodles and butter, and wheat toast would not be very good choices of food to eat at this stage because they all expand in the stomach. There is potential of stretching the pouch. (please don't be offended by me saying that--It is just my opinion based on what I have read and heard others say.) Congratulations on your weight loss! I too am down 15 lbs! Joy 391/376/150
