Trouble with protein shakes
Hi, I am two weeks out and although my dr says to start eating soft and pureed protein, he also wants me to drink protein shakes between meals. Small problem, the word protein shakes makes me gag. I have tried several and just opening the can starts it I have heard several of you mention an unflavored protein powder. Can you tell me what the name is? And where I can find it? I know I am not getting enough protein. And I feel crappy for it.
Also, has anyone lost their mind????????
I used to be forgetful before, now I am plain stupid. It is really bad. My sister says it the morphine from the surgery. I really did not use it that much and I only took the pain med the first nite home. I think it might also be the lack of protein.
Can anyone relate??
Thanks to everyone for your support.
Surgery date 8/24 and I am down 18 lbs.
hi lisa, i for one cannot stand the protein shakes, and the unflavored ones smell awful to me. so what i do is i mix carb countdown skim milk with carnation instant breakfast (sugar free, chocolate) and i get 17 grams of protein for each one. i usually drink three of these a day. and with that and the eggs and other stuff, i am getting over my 80 grams a day needed. I hope this helps.

20 grams per scoop. can be mixed with warm or cold fluids/food.
EAS (makers of Advant Edge) has a Fruit Punch and Grape drink that is 0 carbs, 0 fat and 42 grams of protein in a 20 oz bottle. Sip on it all day with ice if you prefer. I like it a lot. Also, a simple hint, use it in place of water for makng sugar free jello. Then you get protein filled dessert. Good luck and God Bless you.
I put 2 oz of skim milk in my EAS Chocolate Fudge protein drink (bought at Wal-Mart). That made it taste a little better. Believe it or not, now that I am on blended food I CRAVE the things. I ordered some samples of UNJURY protein powder but haven't used any yet so I can't say about them. I used Isopure Zero Carb the first week after surgery and by the end of the week I couldn't swallow another ounce of them. Don't ever want to taste them again so I can relate to your aversion to protein drinks.
Yes, I have lost my mind too!!!!! I can't remember anything. I started this semester at school and am having a very difficult time retaining what I read. I always heard it was an effect of the anesthesia - I was under for 7+ hours. Also the lack of protein affects your mind. I just hope my mind returns before my first test! May God bless you. Yes Lisa I am with you. NO protein drinks can not even get them near me or I start to gag. I am suppose to be on meats and solids now but can not do Pouchy says no!!!! I am also going I will be in the middle of a conversation and go blank and I only did morphine the first night after surgeryand tylenol for 2 days after. I think it is the protein we are not getting enough of. I am going to take some hints you got posted here and hopefully we will both with everyone else here get out of the crazy mode.Hugs Brenda
I have had terrible trouble with Protein. Mostly because I had picked out a shake I liked pre-surgery, and post-surgery...I am lactose intolerant. Furthermore, the shakes are SO THICK they make me want to anyway.
So then I tried Protein bars. Made it about a week before I realized they are so dry that I was about to choke on them by eating them. Noticed I was eating less and less of the bar at a sitting, and knew that their time was also coming to a close.
SO! The next thing (and hopefully LAST) that I am trying is this: http://www.pro-stat.info/ It was recommended to me in the Obesityhelp.com Chatroom, and having read the special "Bariatric Patients" section, I am very encouraged by what I see. Surely I can choke down an ounce at a time! 1 oz. VS 24oz.? Absolutely!! Plus according to the information, this protein is better for us anyway...so I have ordered it and it's on the way.
For now I have been just EATING all of my 60g/day...which is rather hard, but you do what you have to do. I'll let you know how the liquid tastes.

Hi Lisa, had open RNY on the 23rd of Aug. Go to the GNC and they have unflavored 100% Any Whey protein powder. Its good cause you can't taste it. I add it to everything I eat also. Went to the Dr. today and they told me about Isopure apple melon drink, 20oz has 40 gr protien in it. Having one know and its really good, kinda pricey $3.50 a bottle but oh well you get your protien and it taste really good. Also weighed today and have lost 30lbs. Congratulations to the both of us. Hope this helps. Thanks Becky
