Does food gross you out?

Hi August friends, I posted this on the TX board today. In the interest of time, I am just cutting and pasting. Let me know what you think, please! Are you experiencing this as well? Hope everyone is doing great. Take care, Kathryn **************************************** Hello to my wise TMB family, I just know you'll be able to help me! A little background first: I had my Lap RNY on Thursday 8/12. I've done very well, with an uncomplicated couple of weeks. I went back to work last Monday and things are fine. I started soft/easily digestible foods last Thursday 8/26. I can have nearly anything, with the exception of raw veggies, salads, and red meat. Any meat I eat now must be moist (i.e., chicken or tuna in light mayo, etc.). I've been eating cottage cheese, some refried beans, things like this. No problems getting the food down. My question is this: Were any of you totally turned off by food at this point on your journey? Or whenever you started solids? The idea of food really grosses me out, and I am truly eating because I have to. I know that this early, you have to be careful to eat regularly, so that doesn't bother me, but the disgust of food is a little scary. I am sure it's a phase and it will pass, but I really only want to drink water all day long. I've been good about eating anyway, and tracking my food religiously, but I don't want to eat so little that my metabolism wants to take a permanent holiday. I know from what you've shared with me that I'll hit a plateau about week 3-4, so I am expecting that. I just want to give my metabolism every advantage! I was so excited to start solids and am happier on them than on liquids, by far. However, it seems that if I eat something once, I don't want it again. I know I'm only on day five of this so I hope it's just a rough start. Any advice you can give would be most appreciated. I really value what you've all been through and what wisdom you can share! Thanks in advance, Kathryn 8/12/04 -17

Yes, food does gross me out. I can't believe it. My surgery was on August 16. I can eat, cottage cheese, an egg, a tsp of peanut butter and apple sauce. Everything else seems g-r-o-s-s lol.. Who'd think I'd ever say that. Thank the Lord I found some protein drinks that I like. I see the Dr. on Wednesday, I was going to ask him about it. I'm sure it's normal at this point in the program. Thanks for sharing. Barbara

I wouldnt say that food grosses me out but I find that I don't have the same interest in it. I have basically been eating scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and chilli. Just haven't been wanting anything else right now. Patty

Hi Kathryn, I'm 2 weeks post op and have not tried solid foods yet, nor do I have any desire to do so! I don't think it so much grosses me out rather I'm a little afraid. I will be staying on full liquids for two more weeks and then I guess I will have to graduate to solids. Hopefully by then I will be emotionally ready! I do have a craving for KFC mashed potatoes though so in a couple of weeks that will be my first solid food! Sandy

Hi Kathryn, We have the same surgery date I see! Food does not gross me out so much as textures, smells and tastes. First of all, I can not get very much of anything in. I am drinking water, propel, and one protein shake a day. If I am lucky, and if my pouch lets me...I am able to actually get a tsp of something in. It is amazing to me to read all the solids folks are on. My pouch revolts at the taste of cottage cheese, broth, SF jello, so I have in fact just stuck to water and Unjury shakes. The other day I was determined to get something in. I went to taco bell got a beef bean and cheese burrito. I cut one inch, took the buritto off and ate the beans, beef and cheese. I was able to keep it down which was a major feet for me. Funny how this surgery affects us all. Congrats with your loss Denise 8/12/04 -35

Yes. Actually I find that I crave just about EVERYTHING that I'm still not allowed to have... On the few occasions I've tried something new (mashed potatoes, refried beans mushed up, etc) it's made me want to puke... I had KFC mashed potatoes and taco bell's refried beans (I had a huge craving for these post-op). Now the thought of them makes me sick. I'm experiencing the same thing. Once I have it I don't want it anymore. I guess the key's finding anything that we can tolerate well and just sticking with that. Heaven only knows I've tried. Keep your chin up, you're doing well!!! Thanks everyone. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your words. It makes me feel good to know that what I'm going through is happening to lots of us! It's so comforting to have this forum so that we can share with each other - especially since our dates are all so close. Take care, each and every one of you. Kathryn
