Question about post-op nausea

My surgery was 8/11 so I'm about 10 days out and this morning, for no reason I can tell, I was extremely nauseous and I a little. Or at least, I tried to, I didn't bring up much. But it was a throughly miserable experience. What bothers me is I have absolutely no idea why it happened. I'm still on clear liquids, all I had this mornign was my protein shake made with water, which I've had every day since my surgery. Why would I get so sick all of a sudden? Lisa Huffstetler

Lisa, I do not know why you are having the problem. My doc gave me a scrip for nausea, which helped last night when I was sick from over eating. I hope it gets better for you. Marla

Hi Lisa! We have the same surgery date! Did you experience any heartburn with the nausea? I ask this because I have had really bad heartburn when I wake up in the morning along with burning in my pouch. I am going to see my surgeon hopefully tomorrow to make sure everything is okay. Sometimes with the heartburn I get a bit nauseous. It goes away but it is certainly unpleasant! Anyway, back to you. Did you stay up late last night? What was the last thing you ate or drank before you went to bed? Did you lay down the minute you were done eating or drinking? My surgeon told me to always make sure you don't eat (not that I can anyway because I am still on liquids) or drink anything 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. He also said that you should make sure your head is elevated enough. He suggested that I put 2x4's under my bed so I am at a slant. This prevents the acid from creeping back up to your throat. This could be the cause of the nausea. Good luck, sweetie! Denise

Hi Lisa, The anethesia causes this. I was Nausiated the whole time. I also had some complications but the the nausia is caused by the anethesia.... Also I am told that we just go through so many changes, and we have good and bad days. I can drink water water and water. I can drink my protein shakes made with milk- as far as jello, broth, etc--- ...Go figure..... Goood Luck! Denise

Lisa, I wish i could be more help. My surgery was on 08/04 and the only times I have been nauseated was right before I threw up. The anesthisia didn't bother me. Even eating those nasty eggs in the hospital didn't bother me. My dietician only has her patients on clear liquids for the day after surgery. I was served eggs and grits for breakfast before I went home. (Both were NASTY and I only ate one bite). I get really gassy, need to burp feeling when I am drinking. I think its because I am breathing while drinking and getting air down. Sometimes it really hurts, sometimes, I feel like it is going to lead to nausea and vomitting. But it doesn't. Everyone struggles with their own little issues. Leland Lap RNY 08/04/04 283/253/150

Lisa - I got horrible nausea about a week out. I was having bad diarrhea and eventually pinpointed it to my protein drinks. Well, because of how bad I was feeling, I was afraid to eat anything. My doctor told me that my nausea was because I wasn't putting anything in my stomach - apparently, my liquids weren't enough. So, I would eat a few bites of thin cream of wheat about every 3 hours and haven't had nausea since! Foxy Baby Diva RNY 8/4/04 -21.5 lbs.

I had surgery a week ago. I felt sick everyday for the next week. Today is day 7 and I moved from clear liquids to full liquids. I had oj this morning and it helped a lot. I thought of still being on clear liquids would make me sick.
