Had my pre-op...
Hello!
Yesterday I had my pre-op testing at Grinnell Regional Medical Center (Iowa). Here is what they did:
1) Took detailed history and characteristics
2) Ran an EKG - simple - didn't even have to take my top off
3) She had me suck on a plastic tube connected with a plastic device that measure lung capacity -- she said that it was to establish a baseline, and set mine at about 3000cc -- I will have to do this after surgery about every 20 to 30 min to help to prevent pneumonia
4) Discussed exactly what would happen the day of surgery (along with estimated time-frame for each step) and subsequent days of hospitalization
5) Spoke to someone from anesthesiology concerning stuff relevant to the anesthetic - he also told me exactly what kind of tubes, etc. I would have during and after surgery/recovery
6) Spoke to dietician, who was a skinny little young thing (I was reminded of a mall teen), but she turned out to be very professional and informative, telling me exactly what I would be eating during the hospital stay and aftwards and showing me the portion sizes so I wouldn't be shocked
7) Went for a chest x-ray - had to remove my bra, but not my shirt
This all took about two hours and was easy, easy, easy.
Just thought people might want to know what was involved - at least at Grinnell.
Regards,
Martha
