I had my second pre-op visit with the Surgeon. He said I must loose 20 lbs prior to surgery on 8/17. Doesn't seem like much but I am not going in the right direction. I am gaining weight. All the thoughts of never being able to eat this again, etc. and so I eat what I shoudl not eat and up goes the weight. I am so afraid that he will cancel my surgery if I don't loose the weight. Any suggestions or has anyone else been in this situation?

Not had that problem. But why do you have to loose before surgery? Aint that the reason we are having surgery? GEEEZZZZZZZZZ Marla 8/3/04

Jill, You could try drinking lots of water and excercising or at least walking. Try snacking on fresh fruits and veggies. Apples are good fat burners and so is citrus fruits. Watermelon acts like a diuretic. You can try these if you want I don't see that it would hurt. My Dr. has me on an excersie routine for pre-op. and I will get a post-op routine 2 weeks after. Good Luck!!!! Cindy

Your Doctor may be doing this to get you body ready for sx. i have to go on a liuid fast one week prior to sx. this will shrink my fatty liver and improve my liver enzymes.i hear that the carnation instant bkfst sugar free is great and very filling. you might try that.think of this as the last step to get to the losers side All the Best! Hi Jill, Yep my surgeon wants me to "lose at least 10 pounds & as much over that as possible would be great". He said that large people have enlarged livers that tend to lay on the stomach and it makes surgery easier if you could shrink it some and this was the reason for the request to lose some weight prior to the surgery. He gave me a low carb (under 60 carbs per day) and moderate fat diet (stresses poultry & fish over red meat) to go on until surgery date. You know that routine no sugar, no white flour, no rice or potatoes. He never said he wouldn't do the surgery if I didn't lose, just that it decreased the chance of starting the surgery LAP & having to go to open while i'm on the table because the liver was too much in the way to safetly do it LAP. When they called me Friday with a date I have done the same as you so far this weekend, eating my favorites now & thinking of starting the diet Monday. Greg

Same here, but my dr. asked me to lose 30-40 pounds! Keep in mind I have ALOT to lose. When I saw my surgeon I weighed in at 521. Anyway, it is to shrink my liver. He said there would be a 20% chance he has to convert to open, so I need to lose as much as possible. *~Amber~*
