I am trying to figure out how to tell my boss I am having surgery in August. It is a medical condition, so I know I will be able to take off. I just wonder how to approach the subject, and let him know I will be back at work as soon as possible. Any ideas would be great! Alicia

The best advice I can offer you is to tell your boss straight forward about it. Be honest and make sure you give yourself enough time for recouperating. Give him a period of as long as you are allowed to be off and tell him you will advise him if you will be able to return earlier. Good luck Patty

I was lucky. My boss is a "kinda" friend and is overweight also. She and I have been on so many diets together it is not funny. So when I saw the ad for a weight loss surgery seminar, I just showed it to her and asked her to go with me. We went and she decided against the surgery and I decided to go ahead with it. And, she's encouraged me every step of the way. She has also been on the South Beach Diet for the last 3 months, quit drinking, and has lost 45 lb. I am proud for her and hope she can keep it off this time. My advice for what it's worth. Because of the family medical leave act (FMLA) most larger companies will give you up to 12 weeks off per year, unpaid of course. Get the forms from your HR department and make sure you're filling them out according to your company's rules with plenty of time to spare--my company requires 30 day notice unless it's a medical emergency. Then, simply walk into your boss's office with the forms in hand and tell him that you're having some surgery in August. Just be professional, firm, and blunt. According to the forms in front of me, I don't even need to tell my supervisor what I'm having surgery for as long as HR gives the approval. Make no excuses and DO NOT act like you can put your surgery off. Just say to yourself this is not an elective surgery--it is medically necessary just as if you were having your gall bladder or appendix out. Sorry I can't be much more help. Let us know how it goes with him, okay? -joanne s

My boss was cool about it as well. But unfortunately, she asked me if I could change because there's some one that is going to be on Maternity leave and people being on vacation. I was a little hurt at first, but she was just asking....but good thing it's not changeable!

Tell them minimal. They cannot ask if you were for alarger company that employes over x number employees and protected under FMLA. For mine it states I am having surgery. Only the health care director has a chance of finding out more and they cannot state a word of the cause. M words to those nosy little people who have to ask is I am having a hernia repair from when I just had my gb out. Since I am taking 2 weeks vacation right after I come back, maybe tell them I went to club med!! lol whocares! Am sure they will talk, but hey that is their perogative.
