i will be having surgery august 29 and i am very nervous. Is it very painful? Also, i am having panic attacks because i have to use a breathing tube because the anesticialogist said that my sleep apnea will worsen after i come thru. Can anyone tell me what they know from this because i need all the advice and support i can get right now. thanks Rachael

I am having open rny on 8/27, I heard people with sleep apnea need to be watched closely after surgery because of the anesthesia. At Northwestern Memorial if you need CPAP nightly, after surgery you are in ICU over night so they can keep a close eye on you. It is for your safety. You will do fine. Just do everything they tell you to do. They are concerned for your safety. I will pray for you for a save and uneventful surgery. ((((24/7))))

I don't have sleep apnea but I thought I would repsond to your post. I had open RYN on 08-19-03, I am 25 years old and doing great. I have been off all pain medication as of yesterday morning and getting around pretty good. I am still a bit sore but that is to be expected. Trust that the Dr. will take care of you and everything will be ok. It is ok to have 2nd, 3rd, 4th thoughts. I rememember them wheeling me back and all I was thinking is I can't do this I better tell Dr. Zahn and then I woke up. Here I am today happy that I had the surgery. You will do fine. Tina

RNY on 08/21/03 with
Hi - I just got home Monday after having open RNY on 8/21. I have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP every night. I was put into ICU after surgery for the first night so they could monitor me until I was completely out from under the effects of anesthesia. The only "bad" part of the entire surgery was I was waking up when they were removing my breathing tube after surgery - I felt like I wanted to vomit (sorry for being gross). They didn't remove the tube while I was still completely under, but waited until I was starting to come around. I was told this was so they could make sure I was somewhat conscious to breathe on my own. Once the tube was out I was fine. I have almost no pain now and am tolerating all of the liquids well so far. Remember to take lots of chapstick with you - you will be very dry for the first two days. I wasn't allowed any water or ice chips until Saturday. Good luck to you - you'll do great.
