uploading new avatar pics

I'm having trouble uploading a pic for my avatar photo does anyone have any suggestions, it keeps saying the photo is too large

Don't know if this is the best way.  I'm not an expert on the computer and doing all the cool tricks it can do, but this is how I do it.

I open my picture into Microsoft Office Picture Manager.  Then I click Edit Picture.  I crop the pic just to have what I want in it then I click resize.  Then select custom width x height and I put in 100 in both boxes and it gets as close as possible to that.  It has to be 100 or less to put on your avatar.
