Topic: RE: Need Help RNY or Lap Band??
I had the same thoughts as you originally and it is a really personal choice...no one way is right for everyone. I did intend to get the lap band, but I did end up doing rny instead. My main considerations were: 1. Rate of weight loss is better with rny 2. I wanted the threat of dumping due to my sweet tooth 3. I didn't want the maintenance of having to go in for fills with the lap band. My surgery has been pretty recent, but it went quite well and I am recovering pretty well. My main issue is some soreness where my ab muscles were cut. Either way is a big lifestyle change.

Topic: RE: July 7th Surgery Date - nerves are getting the best of me.
Nathan, Glad to hear from you and that all is going well. Same here! Somehow I missed the part about all the water weight gain from surgery - I gained 10 (sigh!). Finally lost it and 2 lbs under pre-op weight. Saw my surgeon yesterday and everything is going great! Off the pain meds for several days and incisions healing well. The nurse @ the hospital told me it would be four weeks before I could do my running laps in our above ground pool. It has been absolutely gorgeous here and I've been dying to get in the pool. When I asked my surgeon yesterday how long it would be before I could get in the pool, she said "How long will it take you to drive home." I was so excited - like a kid @ Christmas. So now, I can enjoy my remaining 3 weeks of vacation and my pool - I teach HS and we start Aug. 8th this year - really early. As I read my first message and know how much time I spent stressing about the decision - what a waste of time. This has been the easiest thing I've ever had done @ the hospital. I too am off meds - sugars are really down (off oral meds) and my injections are really reduced. Doc said I need to call my family doc to see which meds he wants me to start reducing b/c my bp was 102/60 yesterday. This surgery is truly a lifesaver. What are you doing for protein. I'm doing milk enhanced w/powdered milk and then I use a protein supplement called "Dessert". GNC only had chocolate so I'll have to go online to get the vanilla. Loving the soup for my meals - have actually eaten out 3 times and just ordered the soup - Panera's low fat chicken noodle, Charleston's tortilla soup, and Olive Garden's Zoupa Touscani (potato saugage soup). I just sip the broth and actually ate the potatoes w/the Zoupa w/o the skins. That really makes eating out much easier for me. Pretty much stick to cottage cheese and applesauce for my "meals" at home. So glad to hear from you and so glad that all is going well. Keep in touch. Jackie

My surgery is scheduled for July 31st. I haven't heard about cutting back yet? I am having the Sleeve gastrectomy with Dr. Jossart in San Francisco. Please tell me more!

Don't let anyone fool you,,major surgery is risky for anything. I had RNY and have not had any issues and the two boards of RNY's and Sleeve people will agree to disagree. My blood work is excellent and have had no abosorbution lssues like some surgeries. Thing is though there are so many types of surgeries that it all gets confussing and people will argue and scare the hell out of you. I didn't do the lap cause I know I would cheat around it. I had RNY at Pitt hospital in NC with a group of Doctors that practice under the Founder of the RNY which use to be call the Greenville bypass in the 60's. They do not offer the Sleeve. Please discuss your choices with Your Doctor and how what they feel are issues with each. They are medical proffessionals. Second go to your state forum on here and find folks that have your same doctor or the one you choose to have and ask them questions on his staff, follow ups and such. For his office...Don't be afraid to ask...it's your body' what his statistics are on his proceedures, ie: deaths, complications and such. They have to tell you. Research him good. When you research the different proceedures be honest and think about how it will fit your life style. None of them are easy to begin with, it's a shock to your body and if your doing this to be healthy than don't listen to..well we can eat what we want with ours cause it's going right on out. Your doing this cause bad choices and habits got you hear and no matter what you have got to change your eating habits and life style. It is a commitment to better health and a better lifestyle and this change should be for the whole family. Good luck, listen what folks say and right down what they claim is good or bad, then ask your Doctor what is true

Ladies!! Lets get out of the bed, chair or whatever and get out in the heat, or morning heat and start walking. One, it will help with getting anastia out of your system which contributes at this point to your depression, two your body will feel better if it is moving beleive it or not. Most though I believe we were all told somewhere along the way that this tool will only help you lose weight fast the first 6 months and slow up for the next 6. Your body starts adapting to the new plumbing, your hormones will straighten out later on, oh yea rapid weightloss dumps stored hormes in your fat cells into your system, hence great mood swings and depression. For some it can be an issue. Alot of it at first is from the surgery and anastia. BUT this tool only works long enough by itself the first year and if you don't not only start changing your eating habits not exercising your chances of regain get higher. At this point your doctor should be telling you to start walking at least 45 minutes a day, slow if you have to and build up but you have got to commit to someform of movement from this time out..Yep we all get off track and believe you will know cause it doesn't take much time to gain back a pound or two. You can't eat much now but you will months out SO strap on that IPOD and get walking, walking is good for depression too. Remember this surgery is a tool. It will be there but it won't work as good on farther out as it does now but it gives you the time to get rid of bad habits and start new good ones. As my Doctor told me at my 6 month check up, "your going to slow up in weightloss (it did)and the rest of it now will depend on your lifestyle!" Think ladies 6 months from now is just past christmas...see how time flies! Go to www.fitday.com and get in the habit of logging your food consumption plus how much exercise your doing and it will let you know how your doing.

If you are looking at the RNY vs lapband, then do yourself a favour and also research the sleeve (VSG). No fills, no adjustments, no aftercare, but lesk risk than RNY.

It's been a little over 1 week for me and I have had some occasional bouts of crying and some definitely tough periods of being hungry and wanting something other than broth etc... When I am in the middle of them, it feels like I am always going to feel that way. I'm bored with sitting around...going out to do something....anything...usually helps. Recovering from surgery is definitely not a super easy task is it?
