Topic: RE: I just got scared.
Hi Fawana, I was 36 when I had my bypass. I was not over weight until after my third child and then I went on phen-fen. When I was taken off of it, I ballooned and got out of contol. My husband is military and always deployed or on field problems and so I ate out of boredom. In Dec 2005 I found out I was pre diabetic and I also had a condition known as vasculitis (my legs would swell and break out in red pin dots all over. The doctor recommended I have gastric and I was scared to death. Fawana, it was the best decision EVER! Depending on your helath problems, you should be okay. Good Luck!

Topic: Abdominal Plasty
I had my tummy tuck done in June. I am worried because my belly button keeps oozing. There is no odor, however the ooze looks like pus and there is some blood. It crusts over and when I clean it, it comes back. I showed the plastic surgeon and he says this is normal. It has been 7 weeks since surgery and even with the doctors reassurance, I am still nervous this isn't good. Any advise?

Topic: FEELING REALLY DISCOURAGED
I have just recently started considering having gastric bypass surgery. I havn't yet been able to speak with my doctor (his office is closed until mid-August) about it but have done some research on my own. My sister had this surgery done about 1 1/2 years ago now in Quebec (she went to a private clinic and paid for it). Unfortunately, I am not in a financial situation to go to a private clinic. I am trying to find out information on current wait list times in Alberta (with any of the available sugerons). I am finding that some people say they waited five years while some only wait a year. I was just hoping that someone might have some current information about this! Thanks so much!!!!!

Kris, Take a breather!! It is natural to be scared, this is major surgery. I have never heard the 1 in 50 or the 1 in 200. I'm sure you have researched your surgen and the hospital. Have you gone to your home state forum yet and talk to anyone there yet? You may have a few folks who have the same surgen or have had the surgery at the same hospital. Leakage can happen but they are going to watch you for that and will test you the next day after your surgery before they even let you have your first protein meal. You will have a Berium swollow test. You might even get to see it as they do it. They have you stand up infront of this xray machine and record this nasty thick chalky liquid that you'll have a hell of time to get down, go down to your stomach and through your intestines. It will show any leaks. They will give you a list of things to watch for and you will be back in a week to see the surgen and again in a few more weeks and so on. I know of one lady on the NC board that did have issues with leaks but she is straight now. Infections do occur but not the norm. Blood clots is the big issue with major surgeries so they do encourage you to walk alot espically the first month after surgery when all you want to do is sleep. Some people do get sick to their stomaches most time from not sipping or eating extremely small bites chewed to peices before they swallow. If you put to much in it will hurt like hell and hopefully yes hopefully come back up. You have to play by the rules for real!! I don't know of anyone having constent pain. Yes the first month is tough by it get's easier each week. Vomiting can be from alot of things. Some people can't tolerate milk products anymore or high starchy carb foods but try them anyways. For some it goes away. Personally I wish I did dump on high startchy foods. Just high creamy stuff and butterscotch sauce. The majority of people do fine with this surgery. Things do happen but you won't here about the thousands of us who have no problems. You will need to take viatamins the rest of your life but it is a trade off from diabitis meds or high blood pressure meds or any other issues that come with being over weight. You will be fine you just have to be committed.

Topic: RE: My surgery date is July 29th I wanted to know where to get the protein test tubes with the 42 grams
Read my post before yours "As time goes by". Protein bullets can be bought at GNC health food stores or online at this site you'll see them flash up in the adds. What you are about to do is a major step and life changing event for you and your family. It takes alot of hard work mentally and physically. There will be happy moments, frustrating moments and tearfull moments and alot in between. Don't let anyone fool you this is not easy for alot of us. Always be honest with your Doctor even about cheats, what can they do to you after the fact! LOL. Keep the communication open with your family and spouse. They will also be scared for, frustrated with you and happy with you but they can't understand where your coming from or understand how your emotions will roller coaster unless you talk to them and let them know alot of it is side effects from weight loss but not perment. You may the first month think what the hell have I done but a few months out you will feel different. Don't buy alot of protein drinks like slim fast or what have you, things will taste completely different after sugery and you won't be able to drink much of it and you'll get sick of them. Believe me. Head hunger will fight you but don't give in cause it will hurt like hell or make you sick if you eat the wrong things to soon or too fast. Follow the rules, no matter how sick you are of certain foods time goes by fast. Your taste buds will come back to life much later which isn't a good thing LOL. Get a toddler spoon, ****tail fork and a small, plate. This is what you will use for a while till you learn to measure your food . Food is measure by size not by weight. When you get home and they say 2 oz of protein drink in several meals a day thats 2 medicine cups from the liquid tylenal bottle. Believe that will even be hard to get down. Load up up popsciles sugarfree, sugar free Icess, jello, crystal light to help with the fluids. Make sure your nutritionist gives you a good guide to follow post op. Don't take much with you to the hospital except some good slippers, a rob, extra blankie and some large panties. Alot of times for some reason our periods will start the next day. Some people have bowl movements in the hospital some don't either way when you do depending on your surgery and how swollen you are it may hurt to bend over and wipe. Modesty is a thing of the past. You won't feel like doing much espically with the meds. You won't feel like socializing or reading a book either. You will be sore on the ride home so dress very loosely or go home in your robe and ask for or take a small firm pillow to hold against you left side cause you'll feel every pot hole and RR crossing. I found sleep in the recliner the best for the first few weeks. You will nauturally have pain and pulling feelings on your left side alot!! This is where all the work and new plumbing was done and as it heals you'll feel all kind of things. Be carefull not to lift heavey things though. You have to get up right away and start walking and walking it will make you feel better but it will take weeks to get the anastia out of your system, this results in mood swings, gas and bloating and waking up from a dead sleep to wide awake. Don't get on the scale for at least a week after you get home....I'm telling all of you it is not your friend. People differ and some folks actually gain a few pounds that 1st week which is all fluid from surgery, not moving and your body just freaking out, it will go. Remember to stay positive and keep positive people around and start getting all the food junk out of the house even though the first few months you most likely won't even want it but they will start call ing your name in about 4 or 5 months so don't even consider bring them back!! Remember fluid is important get a good easy to cary mug and keep it full of water or something and small sips all day long. You can do this. Go to your home state Forum if you haven't already or this months board or both and ask for an Angel who will keep in contact with you these first few weeks and report on your surgery and keep all you OH friends up to date and on a prayer list. Its alway good to know folks are praying for your success. I hope some of this helps and Good luck!!

Topic: Scared to death!
My surgery date is July 28. This has been a long process, and now that it is so close, I am getting scared. It doesn't help that I googled "death in WLS" and read everyones awful stories. I have always been told that the chance of death is 1/200. But now I have read that the chance of death in the first 30 days is 1/50! Has anyone else heard that statistic? I am also worried about complications - has anyone here had leaks in their staples? What about constant pain and vomiting for years after? Vitamin deficiences? I have a lot of confidence in my surgery team - I am afraid of the risks we have no control over.
