Topic: RE: July 14th, hopefully!
My RNY is scheduled for July 17th. I am excited and I am scared. I have already had a very serious heart attack with muscle damage and a triple bypass surgery. I am a type 2 diabetic and have mild kidney failure. My family is not supporting my decision because they are afraid of the complications. I keep trying to tell them that I am already having signs of serious diabetic comlplications and this surgery will help me. I haven't seen any posts of people who have serious health problems like heart attacks etc...who have had the surgery and made it through. My cardiologist doesn't believe in the surgery saying that the long term nutritional problems far outweigh the benefits. I was interested to know what your cardio docs are saying. I want to have this surgery but the more I study the long term effects on SOME people, the more I begin to question my decision. I do not want to trade one set of health issues for other ones. I guess I am on the fence and it isn't a good place to be. I haven't started any of the counceling sessions yet and only had one visit with the surgeon. I did attend a support group meeting and talked to several people who have been successful. I really want to go through with this for my health but I am afraid. I don't have the support here from my family and friends that I should be getting and it's so hard to make the right decision. I did set the date for surgery so I guess I am heading in the right direction.

Topic: Hello, from the JULY 2007 board! What you can expect!
Hey guys...I had surgery in July of 2007 and am quickly approaching my one year surgiversary just as you guys are approaching your actual surgeries...I can't believe the year has gone by so fast!!
So, what do you have to look forward to?? EVERYTHING!!
I have been lucky and have not had any complications...my surgery was super easy, recovery was super easy, abnd I have NEVER once been sick!!! I was in the hospital one night and in total I was home within 24 hours. I walked as soon as I could after surgery and kept on walking every hour. I would highly recommend this as it truly speeds your results time. Oh, I also recommend that before surgery you have something for gas at home. The gas was the worst part of surgery for me.
So, what have my results been? I know your dying to know!! My highest weight was 311...day of my last surgery consult...287...now...192!! I went from a size 30-32 in tops and size 26 in bottoms to size 14 bottoms and large or x-large tops. I bicycle, walk, lift weights, swim, etc. I have tons of energy and feel FANTASTIC!! I still would like to lose another 30 plus about 10 more of skin after plastics, to get to my goal of 150. I can't imagine myself there, but I am still losing, even though it's SLOW going now.
I just want to wish all of you well and tell you that this is truly the BEST decision you will ever make for yourself!!
Other advise...take your vitamins, stay away from carbs as long as you can, drink lots of water, exercise as soon as you can, and get in all the protein you can! Try not to cheat and test yourself on sweets until you just can't stand it any longer. Some of us don't dump and finding that out might be like opening pandora's box for you, so avoid knowing it as long as you can to maximize your success!!
I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys might have, but most of all I just wanted to wish you the very best!! You just have no idea how this is going to change your life.
Topic: July 1 op date for DS
I am writing this for my wife Robin. She is set for July 1,2008 with Dr. Buchwald at the University of Minnesota.
After being turned down by other surgeons, this is such great thing, to get approved.
If the DS is half as good as people say, that would be wonderful.
We live in central Minnesota and we would love to hear from anyone.
