Blood thinners
Congratulations on your surgery. I am scheduled for GBS on July 9. I wish you the best. I have to give myself a shot once a week for a form of rheumatic arthritis that I have. The medication which is called Enbrel burns as it goes through your system but I have noticed that it bothers me less as time goes by(been taking these shots since Dec.) I have learned that an ice pack placed on the site before and after the shot seems to help. I know this is not the same med you must take but hope it helps. I have learned that I do not like to give myself a shot in my abdomen area, it seems to be more uncomfortable than if I did it in my thigh, is it possible that someone in your life could give it to you, might be easier to handle if you didn't have to do it. My mom had to take those shots of blood thinner stuff after colon cancer surgery, I gave them to her because she absolutely hated needles of any kind. I also had to check her blood sugar because she wouldn't, she said she didn't dread it as bad if she didn't have to do it. She had medicare and they would have had home health come and give her the shots if she couldn't or didn't have anyone to do it for her. Maybe you could ask about that. I guess it depends on your insurance and cir****tances. If you don't mind my asking what type of surgery are you having? My Dr has never mentioned any kind of blood thinner to me, is it only in certain cir****tances? He did give me a prescription for some type of prevacid to prevent ulcers. Thanks!!!!
Best wishes!!!!!

Hello and congratulations on your upcoming surgery! I am scheduled for July 7th! I had my final appt. with the surgeon today and I too got the prescription for the blood thinners. He said there weren't enough studies out yet and this was the best prevention right now. He gave me a script for all my post surgery meds so I will have them when I get home.
I HATE NEEDLES TOO! I feel your pain. It's only for a week, so I think I can handle it. I keep telling myself it will be sooooo worth it in the end. I was told it's a really thin needle and doesn't hurt. You give it in the stomach.
Best of luck to you- I will be keeping you in my prayers!
Katie
Thank you Katie! Good luck on your surgery on the 7th, my thoughts will be with you. All know all this stuff is worth it in the end, I guess I just got caught off guard with this last one. I guess the cost of it was the bigger shocker but if I'm only on it for 1 week then it will be alot cheaper.
Thanks for the words of reassurance.

was there any particular reason? I just got postponed becuase I have a genetic blood clotting disorder so I am wondering if they will do the saem for me. The Physicians assistant told me that would probably be the route they would go but I still have to see a specialtist on 7/23. I have Factor 5 Leiden's disorder? Just means I am more prone to blood clots once I have one I think, whihc I have had 2 kids, several broken bones, several surgeries and it has never come up before. Oh well better safe than sorry right? Good luck ANdrea
Hi! I was just reading your question in the forum. I just had RNY surgery on Monday (7/7). I had to have the blood thinner shots myself, but mine were while I was in the hospital. Nothing Post-Op. I assure you, the needle is very short. It's just to go under the skin. The first on I had was while I was being prepped for the OR. It really wasn't that bad, but the trick is... Don't put it anywhere but your stomach. I swear to you, I never felt it go in. Now, you will feel a bit of a sting for a few seconds after that. Don't rub it or you will bruise. Don't get freaked out, but you will end up with several bruises without even knowing you hit yourself. This is due to the blood being so thinned out. I hope this helped you answer some of your questions. Hope all goes well with your surgery! Good Luck!!!
