First Alcoholic Drink

I thought I would post about this. I had my first alcoholic drink since WLS. Actually I had two utltimate martinis and they were delicious! I was tipsy real fast but I was ok. I was so scared to take a drink! I know you're supposed to wait 6 months before introducing alcohol back into your diet, but I couldn't wait. After a couple of hours I was sober enough to drive home. I wasn't even tipsy anymore! It felt good to be able to have a ****tail and not be knocked off my feet! I did go home early from the party and limited my drink to only 2. I'm a lightweight anyway when it comes to drinking. I just hope that this does not become habit because I really enjoyed those ****tails! I've read where WLS patients start to pick up habits/addictions in place of the food they used to eat such as shopping, alcohol or smoking cigarettes. That's another thing, I've never been a smoker but I eye the cigarettes with every trip to Walgreens. I am not giving into that temptation though! I'm staying away from the cigarettes! Ya'll help me please! Give me some encouragement!!!

Get addicted to exercise. As an ex smoker my surgeon warned me I may be tempted to go back.. he was not kidding.. I gained like 80 lbs when I quit 14 years ago and I always said when the desire returned.. " not until you lose those 80 you gained"- well Im at 77 and think my brain is like '' hey u promised''. I had a sip of champagne at 4 months and didnt like how it 'hit' me so fast. Im gonna sty away from that.. think of the calories.. they are not worth it.

I have to set the breaks on many things. I've always been very compulsive. Best of luck to you. You'll be ok. Awareness is half the battle. Heidi

Thank God I have never smoked, nor been tempted to!! It was hard enough quitting diet coke before surgery!! I had my first martini when I was on vacation a few weeks back. Yes, I got tipsy really fast and my one drink lasted me the whole night. What a cheap date WLS has made me! I was a light-weight drinker too before surgery, even more so now! Please, please be careful with the drinking and driving though!! Although the effects of the alcohol seem to wear off quickly...the alcohol is still present in your bloodstream. There are many stories of post-WLS patients racking up the DUIs because they feel sober enough to drive but really aren't.

The martini I had wasn't sweet at all. I hear that cosmos are good. Cranberry juice with vodka. Just be careful!

I avoided anything sugary or fruity, which is hard since I really loved margaritas and mojitos. I had a vodka martini and was fine. Just be aware that there is some naturally-occuring sugar in alcohol that can't be avoided. I know some post-op do drink vodka and cranberry juice, but I know others dump on it too. So proceed with caution....and cheers!

Hey I am an old pro in this field I am a year and a half out from my surgery and from experience don't do the martinis in excess. They are loaded with sugar!! I have a vodka and cranberry juice. Less sugar easy on the stomach. I love mixing crystal light with rum or vodka. If you buy the 100% real fruit juice with no added sugars then that will be better for you. You do get drunk a lot quicker after the surgery so limit what you drink. Remember 1 gram of alcohol still has 7 grams of calories no mater what kind you drink. We did all this hard work to get this far we need to try and not over do it!
