The Long Awaited Answer To My Plateau From Heck!!!

I've been on a serious plateau for the last three months. Today I had a follow up appointment with my doctor. He told me that drinks with carbs are keeping me at minus 160 and holding! Apparently, after having RNY surgery, when carbs in liquid form hit the bloodstream, the body produces four times the amount of insulin it did pre-op. This causes "The Hunger(tm)" throughout the rest of the day. I never knew that glass of orange juice in the morning and an occasional beer or margarita would be sabotaging my weight loss attempts so badly! From now on, it is water, crystal light, diet pepsi, and an occasional Miller Light. I should be back on track in no time!

Thanks for sharing this. I had never been told that the body produces 4x the amt of insulin it did pre op...very interesting. Ive been on a plateau for the last week and its been killing me. I will watch what Im drinking more carefully....I had switched from water to drinking more skim milk. Might have to go back to water and profect

Yeah, me neither. When Dr. Colella told me that, it all made sense. My weightloss ground to a halt when I started drinking drinks with carbs. I just never noticed the correlation before!

Did your doctor mention anything to you about not drinking soda??? Mine told me it was a huge No-No. The carbonation expands the pouch. All doctors are different though. I haven't had any and I don't plan to. Thanks for the info though, its nice to know. I drink coffee, Diet Green Tea w/Citrus or Mixed Berries, and water in the AM. No more carby drinks for me. I can't get rid of my smoothies, but I'll hold off till later in the day! Amber

The nurse said carbonated drinks this far out are fine. I wasn't allowed to have them for the first six months.

Thanks for the info!! That's great to know about the drinks, my doc also told me about the no soda part and I haven't had one since 1 month before surgery, but i do drink orange juice (that and water is all I drink) and didn't realize what it was doing to me, but I have noticed when I started drinking it an increase in my appitite, but I associated that with the 5-6 month hunger returniing stage. No more oj for me!! Thanks for sharing!! Lynette

Amazing how every DR is different! Mine firmly believe you should never drink carbonated drinks ever again. Also no alcohol for the first year at least. I've always felt like an occasional drink is fine, but now I won't waste the empty calories. I honestly have wanted a margarita for months but haven't had one because of the year rule. Orange juice is something I craved right after surgery, but only was brave enough to put it in my mouth swi**** around and then spit it out! I've now found Crystal light Sunrise Orange, which I drink instead. Jan

The chew / swish and spit saved my sanity in my first four months after surgery!

My doctor also told me no carbonated drinks EVER again!! So I just removed them from my thoughts. I only drink water and crystal light. I do put diet splash in my protein smoothie, which makes them quite tastey especially with frozen fruit. I had been on a plateau for more than 2 months. Finally, I increased my protein and exercise and also ate more often. I helped, I'm not losing much, but I losing inches and decreasing clothing sizes. My exercise is causing me to gain muscle, which weighs more.

One thing I've learned about doctors is that they all have different opinions, and every one of them is convinced they are 100% absolutely right about everything. I guess it is because they have a rectal thermometer, which is a universal appeal to a higher authority. ;)
