Question..
Every doctor or dietician answer is different. My doctors orders are as follows:
Week 1 post op: Sugar free clear liquids
Week 2 post op: Full liquid Diet- Blender stage
Week 3-4 post op: Puree diet or very mushy
Week 4-6 post op: Soft diet
Week 6-12 post op: Try different foods and see what you can tolerate, progress slowly of course but for the first 3 months avoid the following:
*Dry or dense meat
*Bread or pasta
*Rice or popcorn
* Hard food or stringy food
*Fried food or spicy foods
*Gum, skins and seeds
Hope this helps.

It seems there are several different methods among surgeons both pre and post op. My post op diet is pureed weeks 0-4. That means anything pureed or liquid. Then at 4 weeks I go to a diet advancement class where they increase me to soft solids. I don't know how long after that I move onto more solid foods. Good luck!

It is amazing all the different answers, huh? My doctor seems to keep contradicting herself, as well as the literature that I was given by my surgeon. It's confusing, I want to do the right thing, but let's face it, I'm not volunteering to stay on soup for any longer than I have to!! Thank-you, all for your responses. I appreciate it. Any further info or personal experiences is always appreciated. I really feel lost most of the time. Thanks!
Hey Traci -
as everyone said here, check with your doctor - but also know that we are all different - we can handle different foods at different times. i went to solids as per my dr. but it was too fast for me and i got sick. so he put me back to purees for a few days and now i'm back on (yes, squishier) solids.
keep in mind that some of us can handle chicken, some of us want to curl into a little ball after eating it - tread lightly when eating new foods - you'll be happy you did!
best,
Deb
