irrational fears
Hey there -
Anyone else scared that they aren't losing weight? I know I'm being totally irrational - but i keep reading about people losing 30 or 40 lbs their 1st month and I know i won't lose that much. or i'm afraid i won't. i keep checking that damn estimator to see - i want a guarentee!!!! i know i'm being crazy but what if i'm the ONE person on earth that this doesn't work for?
i mean i know i have to lose weight - i'm eating under 800 calories a day and as ashamed as i am to say it before this i was probably eating over 3000 daily. i mean that's 2400 calories minimum less a day. i HAVE to be losing weight - but then - what if i'm not?
and you know, i decided not to buy a scale - figuring i might go nuts weighing myself every minute - but now, i'm just going nuts in the other direction.
sigh - i'm just venting - anyone else feeling irrational too?
Deb
deb i am the same exact way. i am so nervous that its not going to work. i even had a dream that my doc told me he was sorry but i was one of the few that it didint work for. i dont have a scale either. i dont feel like i am losing much weight at all.
i have lost 30 lbs since may and 17 since my surgery that was on the 10th. but only 30 in all and i really cant tell that i have lost 30.
you try to encourage me and i will do the same for you.

Deb, The first bit of advice I can give is dont compare yourself to others. Each and everyone of us started from a different point in our wt loss and we have different drs who want different things.
I didnt do any diet before my surgery so that makes a difference....I was a cow when i had this surgery and many others werent. The more u wt the more u loose at first. Another factor is what foods your dr has you one. Some ppl are on soft foods 2 weeks out...My dr requires Liquids for an entire month...I drink 75 mg of protein a day in 25 mg increments 3x/d. And Im on a ton of vitamins...very important to keep your metabolism up.. Dont cheat yourself out of protien and the proper vitamins
I have lost over 40 lbs in just 2 weeks but I started out at almost 400 lbs. so maybe someone whos 250 when they start might only loose 20 the first month.... We all have our own variables.
Another factor that can affect ones wt loss is exercise...if u did any before surgery....are u doing any now.
Just trust in the process and in your surgeon. Give it some time and dont worry to much yet....

Hi Deb- I have the same fears, my surgery was 7/11. I was on a 1000 calorie pre-op diet for the two weeks prior, then clear liquids the day before. I was 257 at my first dr. appt in May, and the day of surgery I was 247. At my post-op appointment (9 days after on the 20th) I was 237 according to their scale, but a bit less going by mine. Ever since then I've been at a standstill, but my issue is weighing every day- I am making myself crazy. I haven't weighed since Friday, but hopped on today and I'm still at the same place. I know that it's all a big head game and that the numbers will fall, but I was hoping for more. But then again, when have I ever lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks? I started on pureed food Monday night but the scrambled egg totally didn't agree with me, so I called my dr. yesterday and he said to stay on liquids until Friday. I can feel that I'm really bloated after that, so it could explain it a bit.
It's so hard to not compare yourself to others, but I keep trying to remind myself that everyone is different and loses at their own pace. I'm just keeping my eye on the prize at the end, and if it takes a little longer to get there, then so be it.

PS- I didn't realize that there was a forum for the surgery dates, that's pretty cool!
I know - this dorum for surgery dates is really cool. Thanks everyone for the support/advice. i just have my neurotic moments i guess. the comparison thing is hard too - SHE lost 40 lbs why didn't I and so on... of course i haven't been weighed in two weeks so we shall see what we shall see.
this is indeed a whole new world.

Deb, I feel the exact same way. I went to dr for 3 wk ck up and I lost 15 lbs since surgery (7/05). We are considered "light weights" and we don't loose as fast as others. I know this, but I still feel the same as you. I should be grateful for the 15# loss, but I still am afraid. I can also eat more than 2 oz and I am afraid. This board will help us. Just keep coming back and keeping in touch with your peers. We will get through this together. Pam
I totally can eat more than 2 ounces... but you know, it does depend on what i'm eating. keep in mind the more pureed (liquified) a food the quicker it will leave our little pouches! I've lost 23 lbs since surgery (i snuck in and weighed myself) but my official 1 month weigh in is next week. i'm having a positive day so i feel pretty good. i'm annoyed though - i thought tofu was a good source of protein and it so is not! 3 ounces only has 7 grams of protein. 3 ounces of fish has like 21grams! grrrrr.
you're right though - we do need to stick together. and keep in mind - 15 pounds in 3 weeks? that's 5 pounds a week. that's almost a pound a day. if you keep that up, in 6 months you'll be down 90 pounds (and if you start exercising you will lose more than that) and in a year at least 1 35 pounds! i could live with that i really could. sure iw ant magic and i want to be at 175 tomorrow but still... i guess i really am feel positive today because i have in my head that it took me years to pack this weight on... like 6. if it takes me 18 months to lose it i really am ahead of the game.
thank you for all your support - everyone!
Deb
