I just found out today that I will be unable to have my surgery laproscopic as planned. My surgeron said she feels more comfortable doing the surgery "open". Has anyone recently had RNY open? What has recovery been like?

Hi Melissa, I had open RNY on 7/13. I was in the hospital 1 day longer than if I had had it lap. My staple line is about 6 inches long. The staples will be removed at my 2 week appointment. I was given a pillow to put over the incision site when I needed to cough or move and it really helps. My pain is almost all gone at this point. I do take a pain pill to sleep as laying down does pull a little. I've been sleeping mostly in a recliner or propped up with lots of pillows on my bed. If I had to do it over again I would opt for the open procedure again. The surgeon is able to see everything clearly and I understand there is less of a chance of a stricture afterward. I cannot lift anything 10lbs for 4-6 weeks. I will probably return to work at 4 weeks but could probably do so earlier. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. Best of luck to you. Hi Melissa, I had open RNY on 7/11/06 and my recovery has been great! My incision is barely the length of my index finger. I cannot believe how small it is. I stopped taken pain meds on 7/15/06. I am able to sleep on my side now. My doctor prefers the lap procedure as well and I also felt more comfortable with her being able to see what she is doing. I could go back to work at 3-4 weeks and be comfortable. Good luck to you!
