My Distal RNY surgery is July 6th, and my surgeon is requiring me to follow a 10-day clear liquid (plus 2-3 protein shakes per day) pre-op diet.....2 1/2 days down, 7 1/2 to go.......A friend of mine that had a Proximal RNY last year had a different surgeon and was required to do a Milk Diet for 30 days prior - only skim milk 3 times per day (she had to drink as much as she could in 10 minutes and then that was it) plus water. It seems that there are a lot of different methods for pre-op out there. Good Luck!

The See Food diet! Seriously, my surgeon does not require any special diet prior to surgery. Jezia

2 weeks liquid diet here. Protein shakes 3 times a day, and anything sugar free, like jello, any drinks. Trying to shrink the internal organs so it's easier to do the lap.

Jezia, Your doctor and mine must be working out of the same game plan. I've only got a liquid diet the day before. My biggest problem: I can't drink after midnight on the day before surgery and my surgery isn't until 11:30 am. YiKES. Yeah, like I won't be dehydrated before we even get this show on the road. Take care of yourself!

Well, my doctor wants me to lose 10-13 pounds, to shrink the liver, and he told me to do slim-fast. Shake for breakfast Shake for lunch, half of turkey sandwich. Sensible dinner. Dinner before 7pm and 128 oz. (a gallon) of water a day. It's been 2 days and I'm ok. Good luck everyone.

Hi Marleen, Dr Gould requires a two week "full liquid" diet, and I couldn't get anyone to give me limits on how much during the day. I am staying with fat free and sugar free as much as possible. It's been since June 26th, only five days, but this weekend's going to be rough with our family getting together for the holidays. This two shall pass and the surgery is only 9 days away! The best of luck to you and everyone else. Trudi

I'm on a two-week liquid diet to shrink my liver. The only instruction I was given was to keep my calories under 800.

Like Jezia, my surgeon requires no pre-op diet whatsoever! he is the head trauma surgeon for Albany Medical Center here in NY, and has done nearly 800 RNY surgeries without requiring one. Seems to me, with credentials like that... he MUST be doing something right. He did, however, suggest not eating a tremendous amount the night before, and of course, nothing after midnight.
