what happens after 6 month appt?

I moved over 1000 miles away from my surgeon and i called a surgeon up here who i'd like to make my new doctor and they said after 6 months they don't do another follow up till one year. Does that sound right? Granted i have had no serious complications (and i hope it stays that way!) but i feel really funny being without a surgeon for six months. I had what i consider to be one of the best surgeons in the country, he helped me when no one else would/could and if there's one reason for me to regret moving, it's being so far from his practice. It's kinda scary. anyone want to share some thoughts on the matter.

Hi Jay, My surgeon also stops routine check-ups after the 1 yr. mark. If there are any problems after that of course I could call him. Billie

Did you have your surgery at a Barix Clinic? The reason I ask is that the program they have does not call for any more check ups after the 3 month one until our yearly check ups start. Nothing to worry about though, if you have any complications you should still be able to get into a doctor. Make sure you have the 6-month blood work done, then at 9 months, and of course at your one year mark. I had my surgery at Barix Clinics in Ypsilanti by Dr. Steven Poplawski, he is the Medical Director for Barix. If you have had surgery at a Barix clinic you would be able to get into see him, or one of the other fine doctors that are in Michigan for Barix. (Holland and Ypsi) Mandie

i had mine done at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston Florida. I do see my primary every month and he is watching my blood work but the last round of blood work was faxed to the Cleveland Clinic and they called me to tell me my thiamin was low even though my primary had told me it was fine. It was in fact low so i'm a little concerned that no surgeon will be ordering the blood work now until next july. I AM going to a support group from my new surgeon's office tonight and will ask about having them look over my blood work. Thanks everyone.

After 6 months, my surgeon also waits until 1 year, then 2 years, and then every proceeding year from there. However, my doctor will see me at 9 months, 1 year, then every year.

Program I'm in does 3,6,9 month follow-up with one of the nurses. Then yearly with the surgeon and blood work.

My program usually goes from 6 months to a year without a visit. I haven't been taking my Actigall regularly (okay at all) prior to my six month visit and so the doc wants to see me at 9. I am doing better, still not perfect, but I am taking it at least.

That's normal- I just got back from my 6 mos, and my surgeon said he's see me in a year.

At my program, the surgeon sees you at 6 months and not again until 1 year. But as others have posted, you can always call if there are problems. Good luck with your new surgeon!! Anjanette

Jay - I too do not see my surgeon again until one year and then after that only if necessary (which will be because he will do my hernia repairs at about 18 months and work with my ps for my tummy tuck). I went to the dietician last night and had a decent amount of bad blood work come back so I have to have my blood repeated in 4 - 6 weeks but do not need to see her until I am a year also (unless blood continues to come back bad). Good luck Nancy
