Curves
Melissa,
I have mixed feelings about curves. They have terrible hours. They are always closed and I'm at the point where I could use a personal trainer which is something they do not offer. It is a quick and easy work-out though. I always lose on the weeks that I am good about going. I can't say that it has helped with flab. I think that's a losing battle for me! Ha! I know this is specific to my location, but the women there are abnoxious!! They are always talking about gambling, drinking and who they think is hot! I wish I could wear head phones and block out their petty gab, but you can't!
Good luck,
C Leigh
Curves are franchises, so each one uses the same excercises. Normally as they get more customers they can get more machines. I've found the hours for the one close to me were okay, but didn't provide workout times when I most wanted to work out - Sundays, for example.
I quit because of the machines. Almost every one worked my knee, and I have a bad knee that eventually will get operated on. In the meantime, almost all the machines stressed my bum knee - so I gave it up.
Now I work out with Maya, my personal trainer. Actually, she is a "virtual trainer" on the program Yourself!Fitness. It works with the PlayStation 2, XBox and your PC. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks, and is really helping my cardio and toning me up. It is great because the program has 500 excercises, and it picks ones based on your goals, fitness levels and excercise equipment (I don't use any). However, I'm not flexible enough (yet) to handle the Yoga stuff that is included.

Hi Pam,
Do you use this on your PC or a game system? How much does it cost? Is there a monthly charge? I started looking in to it (thought it was free like fitday) but saw that you have to purchase it and I just can't at this time. So I thought I would ask and maybe I can fit it into my budget eventually. Sounds like it's pretty neat, though!
Thanks!
Lisa
Lisa,
You buy it like you would a game, one time fee.
It cost $25 for the PC, $35 for the PS2 or XBox at Amazon.com. Or you can buy it right from the vendor, it is the same price for the PS2 and XBox, and $30 for the PC version.
I bought from the vendor because I wanted it quickly and Amazon was backordered at the time.
To check it out the website is: www.yourselffitness.com
I'm still using it. It even notices if you missed a day that you had scheduled a workout on. It gently says, "I missed you..."

I am getting ready to join "Fit Zone for Women" this week. I decided on them because of the aspect that there is a trainer there at all times to work with you and any classes that they offer such as aerobics, yoga, pilates, etc. are free with membership. I can't wait to start! I know this will improve my weight loss dramatically! I don't know if Fit Zone is all across the country yet or not..but I am EXCITED!!!!!!! It is a $78 membership fee, which they cut in half when you sign up for electronic payment, then $39 per month for a year membership. I don't think that is too bad. Maybe the prices are different elsewhere..but for here I think that is fairly reasonable! I go in on Tuesday to have a "test run" with a trainer before I actually sign up.

I joined Curves pre-op and loved it. I loved the convenience of it and the ease of use. The people were friendly and encouraging.
However, I will not be renewing my membership because at this point, I have outgrown Curves in a positive way. My heart is so much healthier now and I credit Curves with getting me started. There is no way I would have gone to a big gym before. Now I go regularly. I found that at Curves, I could not maintain a high enough heartrate and after awhile, the equipment just didn't provide enough resistance. I think it is a great first step though.
Still, I miss the camraderie at Curves...they have locations EVERYWHERE! And the hours are mostly convenient. Plus it is only a 30 minute commitment - hard to beat that!
Good luck, regardless of your decision.
