Dumping

OK- I have heard people say "they dump on sugar alcohols"; "dump on sugar"; "don't dump on sugar"-- Am I the only one out here who HASN'T tested the dumping on sugar thing? I am terrified that if I don't, I'll start down that slippery slope, and I'll be the fat round thing rolling down the hill. The most I have had is the 12g in the Dannon Lite and Fit yogurt. How much do you eat until you dump? What prompted you to try it? What does it feel like? What causes you to dump? Don't get me wrong, I have no sugar added ice cream in the fridge at home, and in a moment of PMS desperation I made hot cocoa with splenda, but I just have tried to stay away from sugar.

Well- I personally believe that I had this surgery to lose weight and to make my stomach smaller so that I can't overeat (at least not right now). I want to be "normal" as much as possible. I thought sugar free would be fine because it's sugar free- but nooooo..... I dump on sugar alcohols. I ate half a No sugar added ice cream sandwich early on, and just felt nauseated and really tired and had to go to bed. Oh yea- and rapid heart beat is another common sign. As far as other sugars- I had a couple miniature Hershey's on Halloween; the other day they were giving out samples of my all time favorite cookie- Madelines- at Costco, so I took a half of one. It was soooooo good. Before I would buy a container and eat the whole thing in 2 sittings. I wouldn't dare buy a container now because if it's there..... I don't believe in being deprived, because I would totally obsess if I denied myself anything. Moderation is the key. Now, I may be wrong and as I get farther out regret my choices- but I"m telling you- since I have been eating more "normally", I have been losing bunches of weight. I'll have a little pasta with dinner, or a small piece of bread with butter if I want it. It used to be I'd eat half a loaf with almost a full STICK of butter on it, so I'm way ahead of the game I think. "Normal" people don't deny themselves stuff- so why should I? One of the biggest losers here at OH, Kirk Thompson, shared that he would eat a hotdog every now and then. I had one hot dog and it made me so full I had to lay down. But now I am not craving hot dogs. It's the craving that does me in and I'll just say SCREW IT and eat way more than I should. So I don't do that. If I want it, I have it. In moderation.

AMEN!!!! I feel the same way. I'm always scared to to mention that kind of stuff on here because there are so many holier than thou people that would jump all over people for eating one M&M. I don't dump on sugar at all and wish I did. But I do try to stick with sugar free stuff most of the time but if I want a piece of candy at halloween, I'm damn well going to do it. You are exactly right, I had this surgery to be normal. BLESS YOU for saying this. Janice

I'll give it a double AMEN!! I eat what I want when I want - for me that's easy because I have little to no appetite. I have few problems with foods. For dinner tonight, I had some tortilla chips with cheese, a couple of cucumber slices and a baby carrot with some ranch dip, a bite of pastrami, some baby gerkins and dill pickles. Then, I had a small (marble size) piece of brownie. The biggest problem for me is that so many foods just don't "sound good" anymore that I just eat what sounds good. It might not be the right thing or the good thing; but I'm down 80 pounds (only 22 to goal) and was doing so welll at my 3 month check-up that I get to skip all the in between check-ups and go back at my 1 year point. Thant is awesome Maria, May I suggest something? If you don't have to go back to your surgeon until your 1 year point. Please go to your primary doctor and get your blood drawn just to make sure you're getting everything you need. I go back in January for my 6 month and my surgeon has all his patients blood drawn at 6 months and 1 year and 2 year. Just a thought. My body sometimes feels like I'm lacking in something because I will feel real nasty all of a sudden and I hadn't een eaten anything. I'm anxious to see what my blood test reveal.

Thanks, Janice. I do plan on going to my PCM for bloodwork every 3 months. My 3 month bloodwork was just fine (cholesterol was only 122 - it's never been that low in my life). I've had a really hard time getting protein in lately (mainly because I don't want to eat at all). I try and get it in protein drinks, but some days I'm way low. Overall, I'm feeling great - I'm getting to the gym for water aerobics three times per week and am hoping to add pilates into the mix soon. Congrats on your loss, as well!

Michelle- I agree that you should try to be as normal as possible. I too, am adding a little bread and pasta and rice-- it just fills me up very fast--so I eat some protein first. Before this surgery I was totally addicted to sweets. I could not STOP eating sugar-- Chocolate pie, Chocolate candy, cannolis etc. I had absolutely no self control, and although portions were a big thing for me as well, I knew the sugar was killing me. Everytime I went by a desk with candies on it I would take some. I have had a bit of someone's tiramisu-- but a teeny bite. I just think if the splenda and no sugar works for me, I am a bit safer and better off not testing the self control. Thanks for the perspective!

Just wanted to make sure you know that I wholeheartedly agree with you- if it works for you, then why test it? I didn't mean to sound like my way was the only way. It's just my opinion for what works for me. Funny you mention tiramisu-- I have never tried it!

I am a scardy cat myself and have not tried sugar or sugar free products at all.. My sister had surgery 6 months ago and she had her first dumping experience with 1/2 cup of sugar free hot chocolate. She spent 15 min in the bathroom (didn't come out the same way it came in).. she said it hurt so bad her feet when numb.. then she went to her rest area at her work to take a small rest and ended us sleeping for 45 minutes.. when she woke up she felt much better.....
