What I never got ????

What I never got is why we can eat things high in sugar ( grape juice or other natural occuring sugars- which I had in the hospital after surgery) w/o dumping ; as well as, other fruit and other natural sweet things - yet if you eat something w/ refined sugar you supposidly dump. Isnt sugar sugar ? Does your body really distinguish between " refined" and "natural" ???? I realize were not suppose to eat natually sweet things, and I rarely eat anything too sweet... but still I have always wondered this & thought it a bit wierdy

Sugar is a very complex thing, and there are many different kinds. What triggers dumping is how the sugar is converted into insulin. From what I understand, when you eat refined sugar, it makes your body produce more insulin to balance it out- and that's what makes you sick. The natural sugars don't do that, at least not as badly.

It is weird...everyone's body is so different, isn't it? I have only dumped 2 times...and it was a while ago. I was really "testing" my pouch....my bad. Now I know I can eat small amounts of sugar without getting sick, and will occasionally *once a week at most...more like every 10 days or so* allow myself a treat of a cookie or such. I want my weight loss to keep on keeping on, even though it is so slow...and I am kinda glad I will one day be able to eat "normally" and be able to work to maintain my weight. I don't want to have "forbidden" foods all my life...I just want a healthy weight and lifestyle. To me, being able to eat as normally as possible is part of that. I would rather do more sit ups and be able to have a couple of cookies a week. Kathie

table sugar (sucrose) is absorbed into your bloodstream faster than fructose.
