How is everyone's hair loss going?
Mine hasn't started yet, but I am sure it will. I have been a slow loser so I think mine will probably start a little later than everyone. I lost a lot of hair when I had graves disease (HYPERthyroid) and lost 60 lbs very rapidly (that I put back on very rapidly after radiation of my thyroid) so I don't think I will escape without more hair loss again. I am also taking biotin and making sure I get at least 60 g protein in too, but not sure it's going to help. I was also told to take beta carotene and zinc to try and prevent the hairloss...I havn't been good with the zinc but I have with the beta carotene.....maybe it will make a difference.

Hi Teresa,
I had a VG July 5th and I wanted to reply to your post because I too had Graves Disease before surgery. I had my thyroid eliminated with the radiation pill and started gaining more when the thyroid was about gone. I actually get 70grms of protein in a day but this is done with adding one to two protein shakes in addition to the small amounts of protein food I can fit in. I usually use Champion Whey Banana Scream flavor mixed with Orange Crystal lite. Crystal lite is the only liquid I drink except when I make my own Latte's with soy vanilla milk. I take the hair skin and nails formula with the biotin (among other things). I started taking them before surgery and have upped my dose to double in the last couple of weeks. I started having serious hair loss about two months ago. I know what you mean about the hair loss with the hyperthyroidism and then just recently with the HYPOthyroidism, comes more hairloss on top of having the surgery. I'm on a good dose of thyroid replacement now so that's a good thing but my weight loss has been a bit slower than others with the same procedure because we were trying to find the right dose for the replacement after surgery. I've lost 53.5 lbs since July 5th which I will take anyday!!! I just thought I would share my story with you and everyone on here because you and I have gone through very similar cir****tances.

Massive, massive hair-loss over here!! Luckily I had really thick hair to begin with, but I dread the daily shower & brushing it out. Folks can tell it's much thinner now, but I don't have any bald spots. I, too cut my waist length hair. It was looking so ragged on the ends. It's now down to the middle of my back (a bit past my shoulder blades) and feels a bit healthier. Not much, but a bit. My hair also isn't *nearly* as soft as it was. I'll be glad when this phase is over! I don't take anything special for it, as I've heard both kinds of stories. (My beautician also said not to bother. She also said that I have a ton of new (short!) growth, so it's coming back. Thank goodness!) I think it's genetic, personally. It will either happen or it won't. DH is in school, so I need to save as much $$ as I can, so I don't want to waste it on hair treatments that might not do any good. I really hate the hair-loss, but what can ya do? 3 more months! (So they say...)
Take care and good luck everyone!!

It's good to see that I am not the only one! I know that its not ALL gonna fall out but it still makes me nervous. I know the hair loss is a result from the surgery at this point but I am still trying to do as much as I can to help slow it down. I have also read that there really isn't much you can do but I do take the biotin to help the hair "grow back" as quickly as possible and use a biotin fortified shampoo that I bought from the salon. It's for thinning hair and it does make my hair have a lot more body and "look" thicker.
well- mine started at 2 1/2 months out- and it's still going.. lots of hair coming out- i see scalp on the top of my head- and under side of the back. i cut my hair to about my chin.. i tried upping protein with shakes- but it still fell out- then i bought this salon shampoo- nioxion? and it's still falling out... and i had thin hair to begin with..
now my face is totally breaking out- it's awful... people even say- which WHY do people POINT out the so obvious??
"oh you're face is broken out" "oh you have a lot of acne"- just under my chin and throat area..
I have pcos- and i have excessive hair growth - sideburns- and until chin and throat- and it seems like the follices have gotten all irritated- and caused a major breakout- so gross... and tired of it ... wi**** would clear up.. i know it's hormones..

my hair has been thinning for years but seemed to have stopped, now it's started up again so it's tough to say if it's from the surgery or it was just time. i have been careful to get at least 70 grams of protein a day and besides the normal recommended supplements i also take 1000mg or Biotin a day for my hair- but it doesn't seem to be helping.
i've decided if losing 200lbs means going bald, i'll take it. i'd rather be healthy and bald than 400lbs with a great head of hair.
for most of my life i had long hair and it's killing me to see this happen but i'm getting thinner along with my hair so it's all good.
