I was eating a South Beach meal replacement bar since it has 19 grams of protein and and packed with vitamins and minerals. While reading the nutritional info on the back, I noticed that while it had less than 1 gram of sugar it had 18 grams of something called "sugar alcohol" listed under carbohydrates. What is that?...and more importantly should I be eating it?

Sugar alcohols are artificial sweetners, like Malitol, dextrose, Aspartame, Saccharin and Sucrose. Splenda is Sucrose, Equal and Nutrasweet are Aspartame, Sweet N Low is dextrose and saccharin. You can eat them as long as you don't dump from them. I personally do.

Hi All, Here is the weird thing, I seem to dump on certain artificial sweetners and not on actual sugar. What is that about? I personally would eat only natrual sweetner (honey, sugar) if it was not forbidden by weight loss surgery standards. Also for those of you who do not eat artifical sweetners due to dumping what do you eat?? Leem Lap RNY 7/27 312/269/134
