Calcium Citrate
Hi,
Can anybody recommend a brand of chewable calcium citrate??? And where do you buy it??? I've been looking all over including GNC and it seems that all the chewables are calcium carbonate.
The reason I am looking is because I've been having trouble with kidney stones. In the last two weeks, I have been in the ER twice and had two surgeries to insert a stent and break up the stones plus a number of visits with a Urologist. This has been the most painful, nauseating thing I have ever been though.....EVER ! The WLS and childbirth were a walk in the park compared to what I've been going through now.
Anyway..... when the pain first came on and I was diagosed with the kidney stones, I called my surgeons office and was told that calcium carbonate can be the cause of stones in those patients that may be prone to them.........and guess what??? Yep, I was taking Tums for my calcium supplement!!
Soooo..... any recommendations would be appreciated!!
Thanks, Sue
Thanks for your responses everyone. I will try your suggestions. Cheri.... I won't know about whether the Tums was the cause for a while. I finally passed a small piece of stone and they will have to test it to see what type of stone it is but I do suspect its calcium. For you, I would just say to stick to the Tums. I actually had kidney stones over 17 years ago so there's a chance these were brewing for awhile and the extra calcium supplements aggravated it. I am feeling much better though and the stent is being removed today. I had put off my 8 week appointment with Dr. Bell because I was so sick but I'm seeing him on Oct. 7th and will have a ton of questions for him then. I'll fill you in when I find out.

Whole Foods and Vitamin Shoppe both sell them locally around here. I've been taking the Solar Ray 1000mg chewable calcium citrates (got them at Whole Foods) and cutting them in half and taking one half three times a day but i'm almost through the first batch and want to go to Vitamin Shoppe tomorrow and see if i can get ones that have Vitamin D in them. I was told it's good to take Vit D with our calcium for better aborption (like how milk is fortified with Vit D.)
Well, I've decided to go with liquid calcium citrate that I found on bariatriceating.com. One tablespoon is 1200 grams and it's supposed to taste really good. Looks like with the chewables you have to eat like 4 wafers a day.....not for me. They suggest you keep it in the frig and take a swig in the AM & PM. Will post here when I receive it an give a review.
