Birth Control Pills

Hi! I want to get back on birth control pills. I took them only to regulate and control my period, not for actual birth control. I have got my first period since stopping them just prior to my surgery, and boy am I sick and flooding! I have heard controversy that BC PILLS don't work for up to 18 months after GB surgery, but my surgeon put me back on them cause he said he would rather me take the pill than get pregnant. I am scheduled to start taking them on sunday again, but would love to know what experience everyone else has had. Thanks! Teresa

Hi Teresa, I started on the patch last week because I need the hormones to have a period as well. I haven't had one since I went off them before surgery and every indication was I wasn't going to get one. My understanding is that we can absorb enough of the pill for hormonal control, but not enough to prevent pregnancy so you'll want a back up method of BC to prevent pregnancy. I could have gone back on the pill but I'm really bad about remembering to take them and now with so many pills and vitamins post op I wanted one less thing to worry about.
