Eating
Lyndell,
I was not cleared for regular foods untill last Thursday per my surgeon's orders. Every surgeon has their own plan, it seems, and most of the time our directions differ. Soooo, since your surgeon knows your body and how your surgery was done, I would stick to his advice on this. If you get antsy, maybe give him a call and ask. It can't hurt. Maybe run some food ideas by him that you would like to try and see what he thinks. Don't worry about calling, that's what their there for. Happy healing and good luck!

Hi Lyndell! I am 3 weeks post-op, and have been introducing new things into my diet every day. I have found that creams, such as in creamed soups do not agree with me, but that cheese does. Really anything that you can chew into a "pureed" consistency should work with you at this point. The other day I had some crackers with port wine cheese because i could literally chew it down to nothing. I have also had some lunch meats like turkey and roastbeef as well as shrimp and my boyfriend is taking me out for lobster tonight! This is a trial and error period for us post-ops at this point. Eat what you feel comfortable eating, and if your body can't handle it, believe me, IT WILL TELL YOU! I would follow your doctor's orders, as he does know you best, but I don't think it would hurt to try the things that you would be able to put in a blender and puree the same way they would in your mouth. I hope this helped a bit!!

Hi Lyndell,
I see we had our surgery on the same date. I was told the same thing as you, however, my surgeon's team did give me some options. Sugar free Jello puddings, refried beans with cheese from Taco Bell (masked well with a fork), chicken noodle soup, etc. You can eat at this stage, but it just has to be mashed down to a soft consistency. Just like for a baby. I'm doing great and down 50 lbs now.
I am on a similar thing. The "title" of the foods I am to eat in my food plan is called Pureed. However, they have listed lots of stuff they consider ok in this stage. That includes baked fish and chicken. (make sure the chicken is not too dry or it won't go down). Baked potato or baked sweet potato. (I haven't done much of this because I am focusing on protein.) Any type of beans cooked until soft. Lean hamburger meat.
They also suggest for eating out options- bean burrito at Taco bell and Chilli at Wendy's.
My Doctor described it to me this way. I should be gradually introducing foods with more texture- but slowly. And always chewing very well.
He said to think of your tummy like a baby's tummy. If you have kids you will remember you progressed slowly onto more and more texture until they were eating the same stuff you eat at dinner.
Of course, clarifying with your Doctor is probably a good idea!

Hi Lyndell,
I had Lap RNY on July 19th. My Dr. has us do clear liquids for a week, full liquids for a week, mushy proteins for a week, and then transition to full proteins (meats, etc). My Program also disapproves *very* strongly of protein drinks. They are adamantly against them. I keep hearing that if you drink your calories, you will gain weight. It's one way to defeat this 'tool'. From what I have researched, every single Dr and Program out there are different. Vastly different. So it all depends on your Dr. I would follow what he/she says.
I certainly don't blame you for being sick of pureed foods! Yikes!
Good luck, welcome aboard, and take care,
Lisa
