Interesting Concept From My Doctor
Hello all, I had my first post-op appointment today. (Everything going great) As I voiced my concerns for the difference in the speed of weightloss before and after sugery. (I lost 20 pounds in the 2 1/2 weeks prior to surgery and only 17 in the 4 weeks since). The doctor calculated some numbers for me and it made me feel a whole lot better. We all knew it depends mostly on where you start and how you follow the diet, how much you will lose at first but think of your loss this way... I started my journey in June at 260, I lost 7% of my body weight before surgery (20 lbs), and 8% since (17lbs). As you drop the weight, it will slow down. He said, "If you lose 25 pounds a month for a year you will be dead" which makes sense, you do have to stop somewhere. Would be nice if it was 25-30 pounds a month for 3-4 months and have it stop by itself but I know it won't work that way.
So.....don't freak out because you think you're not losing fast enough compared to some other posters on these boards, don't feel like you're failing...someone who starts at a higher weight might have lost 40-60 pounds the first month but they are still losing the same percentage of their body weight as you are (more than likely.)
No...I'm not saying everyone who loses 40 pounds in the first month are larger or are necessarily at a higher weight, you/they are an exception to the rule and should be congratulated (Come sit by me). Just thought I would help other feel better as I do today.
Oh and by the way, I'm confined to a wheelchair and aside from working full-time and living my daily life in a chair which is quite exhausting in itself, I have not really gotten in a lot of exercise.
Hang in there...and congrats to everyone!!!

Janice-
Hey, Thanks for that. I knew that the higher your weight the faster you loose. But I never thought about me being lighter so then loosing slower.
I too lost more in my 2 weeks pre-op than I did my first 2 weeks after. That explains a lot! And it does help me feel better.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Janice.
Thanks for the input. That is a really great way of looking at things. I like the concept of looking at the % of body weight.
I bought a hand held body fat analyzer at Wal-mart to keep track of my body fat. I know it will take some time to see if move but I think it will be neat to watch it go down. It was only $15.00!!
