12 days post-op, lost 3 lbs., HELP!
Okay, I'm discouraged. And the IV water retention theory is getting old!
I am 12 days post-op (RNY) and have only lost 3 pounds. What in the world am I doing wrong?
I have been averaging just under 500 calories a day and my doctor has me on the pureed/soft food menu. I've been getting most of the fluid in and between 40 and 50 grams of protein.
I have been walking about 20 minutes a day for the past four days. No fast, about 2 miles per hour, but I'm walking.
Please give me from the wealth of your experience, because I find myself starting to get really down.
Thanks - Pam M
Hi Pam
The same thing happened to me I only lost 2 lbs. It was very discouraging. I was on total liquids broth and water for 10 days.
The weight just was coming off so slow. My docs diet is very strick just lean meats and grean leafy veges 1/2 oz per meal 3 times a day no sugar free products or protein drinks.
About the middle of week 2 my weight started finally coming off at about a pound a day . I will be 4 weeks post op on Tuesday and I have lost 22 lbs. I thought I would have lost more but at least I am loosing.
I drink about 80 oz or more of water a day. How much water do you drink?
Maybe 500 calories is too much for you? I was only eating 300 and I called my doc and they told me to decrease it and see what happens. Ask your doc. see what he says .
You probably do retain water like I do. I have been drinking a warm cup of water with lemons in it and some decaf tea and that seems to get rid of some of the water.
From one Pam to another I hope this helps
hugs fromHouston

Pam-
I know what you mean. I am only 5 days post op. But I still weight more than my pre-op weight!!!! It is a tad discouraging to me too. I am figuring if I am really lucky I might have lost 1 lb at my 1 week weigh in!
For some reason at first our bodies don't want to let go of that stored fat.
It sounds to me that you are doing good. Better than me. I am having a big 30 calories a day about (I'm still on clear liquids). And I am only doing a lot of walking around the house. I just can't get my but outside in this heat and walk.
Just keep it up. My SIL and MIL who both had RNY's over a year and a half ago say that the weight comes off in spurts. I am reading a book that also agrees with that theory- they call them "shrinks".
I can attest that even myself- the day I came home from surgery I had an extra 11 lbs. over my pre-surgery weight. Since then I have lost 8 of those- all in the same day.
So hang in there...I bet you have a big "shrink" coming your way!!!!

Hi, I haven't had your problem but I have information:
Some people can't lose because there body goes into shock because your starving it and it starts storing everything your eat (and you gain or lose slower). Once your body gets used to it it will just start dropping 1-3 lbs a day for a few days/weeks then level off again.
If that isn't what has happened to you perhaps its the soft foods you have been eating, most people eat (Mashed potatoes, rice, squash, peas, pudding,-most of these have tons of Carbs and I for one gain just looking at carbs! Be careful not to over do the carbs, I know you are looking for answers and we don't know all the answers, but we are here to support you and lift you up, SO CONSIDER YOURSELF LIFTED take a bath, do your nails, get your hair done, buy some jewelry but keep your eyes on the future not the food! You are going to be HEALTHY and HAPPY and that counts, throw away the scale!! Get EXCITED again, you can do this! WE are With YOU!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU - I have been panicking all day. I had lap rny on the 13th and I made the mistake of weighing myself today for the first time and I have only lost 10 pounds and I am taking in less than 600 calories a day, and literally no carbs. It's so discouraging but your statement about shock was just what I was looking for, I have seen this same post so many times I never thought I would be a slow loser. I also just got over my period so I hope that helps too.
Thanks again. You helped me more than you know. I go back to work tomorrow and hope it will get better.
