Hi Cheri-I had open RNY on the same day you had surgery. My surgery went really well. With that being said I did have to stay in ICU for 4 1/2 days. My kidney's and lungs were "sleepy" and didn't want to wake up from the surgery and work. With the help of fluids and oxygen they decided to work and I got to go home. I was not in any danger during the ordeal but my doc wanted to play it safe. I have not had any problems eating I am on soft foods now. Water makes me a little queasy but that is getting better as well. Helps if the water is room temperature vs. cold. I have not had the weight loss that you have had but believe me I am happy so far. At my 2 week post op appointment I had lost 22 lbs. I have since lost another pound and a half to put my loss at 23.5 lbs. More importantly though I can walk to the end of my driveway which is 700 ft. long and back 5 times. We live in a rural area. So, I am walking a little over one mile. I hope to walk two miles soon. Due to shortness of air and extreme pain before surgery I had a hard time walking to my car! I couln't be more happier with the surgery. I hope your husband recovers soon. Take care to the both of you. Congrats on your weight loss. Joyce McCracken

Hi Cheri I had surgery on the 5th. Things are moving slowly but I am loosing so I am happy. I have had trouble with water retention. My first post op appt I only lost 2 lbs. I was so upset. I did get my period 2 days later but only 2 more lbs came off than. I was only on liquids I mean only broth and water. I guess the broth had too much sodium for me. My doc has me on a real strict diet. No crystal light or sugar free anything. Only 1/2 oz lean meats and leafy veges 3 times a day and 2 liters of water. That is all we are allowed to eat. I drink so much water (80-100oz a day) I feel like I am going to float away. It does keep me full . I have dumped a few times. I guess its just trial and error to see what your pouch likes. If I eat too fast I get severe belly aches. I even threw up water once. I never get this full feeling like I did pre op. Do you? I hope your hubby is doing OK. Keep up the awesome weight loss. hugs from Houston Pam

Hello, I am new here, but saw your message and thought I would reply. I had my surgery (lap RNY) on July 19th (I can't find on my profile where to add my date!) and haven't really had any complications. I got nauseous one time (when I walked too far/fast in the hospital) and haven't had really any since then. I haven't vomited at all (whew, cause I HATE to throw up!). I've had some bad pain in my chest/side/back when I breathe. I actually had to go and see the nurse about that one. She said the muscle surrounding my rib cage got irritated (much like when you break a rib) during surgery, so I was relieved. I thought one of my lungs was collapsing or something! Pain meds help, and time. It's feeling so much better now, thank goodness. I can tell it's healing, and I can almost take a pain free deep breath. Aahhh. Of course I am less than 2 weeks out, so I'm hoping for the best w/no complications. I'm doing Tai Chi, and trying to get out and walk twice a day. Which can be hard if I've done too much the day before. But I've lost almost 25lbs so far. Feels weird to say that. I will be happy when I can start swimming, because I want to do water aerobics. That will be fun. This was a great question. It's interesting to hear how everyone is doing. Take care everyone! Lisa

Hi Ladies, First of all I m glad your all home and doing well and NO MAJOR complications, thank God for that, I've so busy between my husband and myself with our surguries and somethings getting a little complicated it's been crazy around here. My feet seem to be doing a bit better though, the left more than the right. The right one seems to swell up the most the quickest.I'd really like to start some sort of exercise but it's really hard for me because of my back. Even to walk it hurts, need a walker and I get embarressed, Only43 years old and feel like I should'nt have one yet. I used one for a long time and a whellchair and II swore to God please dpn't ever have to make me use one of them for the rest of my life. Anyhow, my husband went out and bought me a poolo a small one, size4ft deep and 18 ft around, something like that so thats going to be so cool it should be finished this weekend. The ladder needs to be put together and then start to finish i filling it up. We have a well so it takes time to fill it, so far 3 days I'm glad all is well and for the ones who aren't, get well soon, Lets lose these pounds ladies. Have a great day and weekend. HUGS, CHERI

Hi all - Had my surgery on the 18th and all went incredibly well I think. Fortunately, I'd been exercising before surgery and I think that really helped. Once I got to the hospital and was hooked up to the IV's they started giving me the antibiotics and I had an allergy to the Cipro, which they took care of very quickly. If that's my one glitch in this whole process, I'll be very very happy. I had surgery Monday morning, and was released Tuesday night. Only took a pain pill twice at home and mostly to help me sleep at night. A few days afterwards I developed a pain in my shoulder blade something fierce. When I went for my one week follow up the dr. said it's most likely my gall bladder acting up and give me some meds for it. Not quite sure how the gall baldder connects to the shoulder blade but it seems to be working. At my one week check up I was down 7 pounds. Wi**** was more, but hey, a pound a day isn't bad. Have been walking fine, and yesterday did a little salsa class. Had to take a break midway but got back to it. It was fun. My doctor has an agreement with the cardiac rehab facility connected to the hospital so I'm going to try and get there tomorrow to do some treadmill and maybe eliptical - see how it goes, what the nurses there say. Still on liquid diet for now. For the most part getting in all my protein and liquids, some days better than others. Been trying lots of different things with unjury to break up the monotony. Thank heavens for Lactaid milk and International Delights SF (great with Unjury protein). I have another week of that. I can't believe how much I'm looking forward to a scrambled egg or some cottage cheese. YUM! Hope everyone is doing well, having a good recovery, and getting in all their protein, water, and vitamins. Cheers, Lynn
