Five days post-op - Is this what others are seeing?
It is done! After a week's delay for an inner ear infection I had my lapband on 7/19/2005 and am now 5 days post-op. I was lucky with the surgery, no nausea at all. I came home on the afternoon of 7/20. On 7/21 I got on the scale at home and was horrified to see that I had GAINED 9 pounds! My mom, who worked surgical floor for 20 years, assured me that was not uncommon post surgery and that it would go away. It did. As of this morning, I am down 17 pounds!
I am still sore and the gas, which did not start until about day 3 was really uncomfortable for a couple of days, but I am over the hump now. Each day I feel better than the day before. With the help of a pillow, I was able to sleep on my side last night instead of my back and that helped loads. I slept through the night for the first time since surgery.
I am on clear liquids for the first week. I thought that would be difficult, but actually I am struggling to get past the minimum 42 oz and have not been close to the maximum 70 oz. I am using the Isopure drinks, so protien is not a problem.
I think this will be much like when I quit smoking. The addiction to nicotine was not the greatest challenge, it was the triggers that made up the habit of grabbing a cigarette. I see commercials on TV and think, "I am really hungry for that pizza/sandwich/ice cream" but when I actually *think* about it, I am not hungry, it just looks good. I find myself in the kitchen wandering around looking in the cupboards even though I cannot have anything in there. It is habit - I am bored so I go roam the kitchen for something to eat.
To all of you who have sent such great supportive notes, thank you all. It was a huge help. When my surgery was postponed for a week I was heartbroke and so many of you came to my aid with messages of sympathy and helping me keep my chins up. You are the BEST!
I would love to hear what other post-op folks are experiencing.
Regards,
Jamie

I had my open rny on the 15th. It has been amazing. Outside of immediately aftersurgery when they asked me my pain level from 0-10(worst) and I was so drugged I said 4, it has been 0-2. I am coming along great. Someone said I could be the poster child for open rny. I was determined to get up and walk and to get in my fluids, etc. I am not going to mess this up by not following what I am supposed to do.
I too have trouble with the commercials-and I can't believe how many are food related. Sometimes I just turn them off. The clear liquid stage (6 days) went well. Had no problem with anything but was definitely ready for full liquids and the variety.
I am still retaining quite a bit of fluid and have lost 11 pounds as of this morning. I go for my (almost) 2 week checkup on Wed. Hopefully I can drive then.
Good to hear things are going well. Take care of you. Luci
