Post op day 5
Hi everyone. I had my surgery (open rny) on July 6th. Surgery went well and everyone at the veterans hospital was so nice. The bed was specifically made for bariatric patients and was very comfortable. I did have to stay in SICU for four days. My kidneys were not putting out enough urine at first and my oxygen level would drop when I was sleeping. Both were corrected and I am now home. Today has been kinda rough though. Nothing I can't handle but I really feel big time bloated. I think I am going to try walking around the house more, maybe that will help. For those of you that are pre-op let me first say that it is a big decision but so far I can say it's not too bad. I expected the worse and even though I am having some discomfort it's not nothing like I really expected. Everyone I have talked to has told me I am doing really well and I do agree. I worried so much and now that I am on the other side I still think it's been worth it. If any of you have any suggestions for my "bloating" or questions about surgery please let me know. I can tell you my worries far exceeded the actual surgery/postop. Take care, joyce
Cheri,
You may just be experiencing the side effects of anesthesia (it takes a suprisingly long time for that stuff to clear your system). It's not unusual to have a temporary bout of depression after surgery. I call it the "anesthesia blues." Do talk to your doc if it persists or seems severe, though. Always better to be safe!
Be well,
Tara
Hey Joyce ~
Congrats on being home, it so much easier to relax when you are out of the hospital (despite having someone at your beck and call which is just so cool).
As for the bloating, I felt the same way the 1st few days, actually til about the weekend. The thing thats helped me is walking. I wasnt much of an exercise nut (still wont be) but its the one thing thats kept the bloating down and the gas moving.
You will have your emotional times. There have been a few times that I was just "blue" and really didnt know why, dont try to second guess it Im sure its natural. After all, we've just been thru a life altering experience, changing everything we'd known about feeding ourselves. Thats huge!
Hang in there my friend -- when youre feeling blue away -- someone is always there to give you a boost email me if you'd like -- [email protected]

Thank you all for your replies. I did walk more last night and that did seem to help some with the bloating. On the blue side of things, I have never really been a "cryer". But last night out of the blue I cried over a vitamin! A vitamin! It was so nasty. I didn't expect the emotional part of the surgery but I did know that it could happen. I feel better today though. Cheri, I don't think you sound ungrateful. I think it is best you discuss your mood with your doctor. If it is something more than just a bad day or two the doctor can prescribe something to help you. Best Wishes to all. joyce
