My surgery was 7/05 for RNY. I've had an incredible amount of gas, not something anyone had mentioned. And it usually comes out in belches, which hurts the surgical site. This happens as soon as I drink something and makes me not want to drink. My Dr. has me on Pepcid Complete, but it doesn't seem to help all that much. Also I am shocked that I am hungry. I thought appetite would pretty much be gone. Nice people have been feeding my family by bringing pizza and I think I'm going to go crazy with wanting a bite so bad!

Maggie I hope you start feeling better. I also thought and heard that you shouldn't be hungry after surgery. Let me know if it gets better. I"m praying for a speedy recovery for you. Hang in there they say it will get Better My surgery is July 28th.

I had RNY 7/5 too. I've had gas too. One reason is because I am pretty sure I am swallowing air when I drink -- so I belch that up almost immediately (or when I get up and walk for a few minutes). I think another reason for the gas is the stuff that was left over in our bowels (if you didn't do a bowel prep) has to work it's way out. I had some bad gas last night... and today I finally went #2 several times. Regarding the hunger.. I am not PHYSICALLY hungry... but I am definately having "boy that looks good -- I want a bite" issues. (Aka Head Hunger) I thought I was supposed to wake up and instantly not want anything. But the day after I could have gone for a cheeseburger and some ben & jerry's. Now... CONSUMING THEM (and imagining that) seemed like a baaad idea. Example: Today my sister stopped at McDonalds on our way back from church. I was going nuts because the drive through line was giong slow-- and I just wanted ONE TINY bite of french fry. (I knew I would pulverize it first. Pureeds start tomorrow, so I didn't think it would be that bad to basically just taste this thing I knew I could crush.) So... I took like 1/6th of a medium size french fry... took the teeniest bite in history... and tasted it. I enjoyed the taste... but then I didn't want any more. So even though I WANTED it -- I couldn't even eat 1/6th of a pulverized french fry.

Maggie, The gas is SOOOOOO normal & SOOOOOO painful sometimes. Mine was pushing on a nerve around my diaphragm and making my shoulder hurt (for some reason, that nerve runs all the way from diaphragm to shoulder - weird, huh?) Head Hunger is also VERY normal. It will last awhile, usually until you are able to eat things that require chewing (like your soft proteins). Keep the faith! You will get through these first few weeks, although you will think they are lasting FOREVER. I only came by this board to ask for support for my friend, but I couldn't help offering a little help, too. Have a great week! Amanda 266/186/147 (-80)
