My surgeon says he really doesn't require a pre op liquid diet except for 1 day before the colon prep. He says my BMI which is 42 is not high enough to require it. What is everyone's thoughts on this? Maybe I should put myself on one anyway at least I have 5 more days till surgery. And what would I eat, just clear liquids or full liquids like soups? My Dr doesn't require ANY pre-op diet. Only thing he said is no food/water after 12midnight the night before! I am going to just do liquids the day before......and I have been watching what I eat for the last month or so anyway!

Sue, My doc requires 2 meal replacements, like slimfast, + 1 sensible meal the week before surgery. Then clear liquids the day before. Not sure I'd give up ALL food at this point if it's not required. Hope this helps. HUGS Kimberly

My doctor requires you eat a regular meal up until 12 noon. Then clear liquids only until midnight and nothing by mouth after midnight.

Hi My Surgeon Dr. Wood in Harvey Illinois, says 48 hours of liquid diets the first day I can have jello cream of wheats, and the sunday before i can only have clear liquids! no coffe or caffine of any kind my family is gonna hate me! Im sure every Dr. has their own way of pre op requirements so just do what your Dr. says i m sure it will be fine, Good Luck! L:isa m. J

My doctor requires a modified diet for 6 weeks before surgery. For 4 weeks it's two meal replacement shakes and one meal a day. The goal being 70 grams protein, 30 grams carbs, 15 grams fat. Then, two weeks before surgery - all liquid diet. Progein shakes, water, flavored water (non carbonated), broth, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, etc. He requires this to shrink the liver to make it easier to do the surgery lap rather than open. I hate it, but he has one of the lowest complication rates in our area so I figure he must know what he's doing.
