3 down 18 to go; liquid diet

Today I completed the third day of my 21 day pre-op liquid diet. It still seems a bit overwhelming, but I am determined to do it. Habits are hard to break and I can't believe how often I caught myself almost eating whatever was in front of me. I even had to host two luncheons (one my first day and one today) and feel somewhat sane. Just drank skim milk while every one else ate. . . I guess it takes a bit of adjustment for me and others. (When someone questioned me I just said I had some medical stuff going on and wasn't going to eat. They seemed satisfied.) I wonder if I am getting enough calories though. My calories have been about 550 each day, but my protein is approx. 65 grams each day. No fat. I would appreciate any input. In case you don't remember, my surgeon doesn't require a pre-op diet, but I knew it would be beneficial for me. And when I told my diabetes doctor she agreed and asked me to add one more week and make it 21 days long so we could have more time to adjust my insulin pump dosages. So I really don't have any guidelines. . . Sorry to ramble so long, but it feels good to check in with someone. Thanks! Pam M

Pam, WOW, 21 days huh? Amazing - but you can do it! I think 65 grams of protein is pretty good, but you could probably increase it a little. It may help with the energy, and it will also help to get those levels way up. It is supposed to help with healing. I heard somewhere that you can only absorb about 55 grams of protein at a time, so spread them out. HUGS! Kimberly

Actually, it's closer to no more than 30 grams being absorbed at one time. That's why overdoing it in the shakes doesn't help you any. Smaller shakes spread more out through the day is the ticket! Good luck!

I am doing the same thing Pam, my doc didnt require it except for one day. I am doing it a week. It will get my liver in better shape and protein helps you heal quicker. But you do only absorb 30 grams of protein at a time unless you are a mega body builder type. So smaller shakes throughout the day is much better. I would aim for closer to 100 from all the research I have done. I am doing 4 25 gram shakes a day along with no sugar / low carb drinks and smoothies. Best of luck, Sue 273/260/?/150 T-5 days & counting
