Although I'm kind of anxious to start my Optifast diet tomorrow, I'm starting to fret. I'm on my last day of real food for God knows how long. From what I've heard, I won't miss a lot of my favorites. Even though I'm waiting to hear if the insurance me and my husband are eligable for truly covers WLS, I'm not postponing starting my required pre-op diet tomorrow morning. I am still scheduled for surgery July 13th. If I hear that they do cover the procedure, I will stop my Optifast and wait until I qualify for surgery depending on what they require of course. After all the replies I received Friday and Saturday to my Aetna post, I'm not too optimistic about them covering. As for now, I'm proceeding as if I will be self paying on the 13th as scheduled. And as for now (today) I'm enjoying everything while I still can. I know I probably shouldn't, oh well . I'm not shoveling anything and everything in, just enjoying a few things like soda and chips and sweets.

Janice, Just remember - the pre-op diet is the hardest! If you can make it through these next two weeks, you'll find it SO much easier after surgery. Good luck with the insurance nightmare! I can't believe it's time already for some of us to start dieting before surgery! WOW - July is almost here y'all! OMG! HUGS! Kimberly

I have heard that about the pre-op diet too. I figure I can do anything for 3 weeks. The first couple days will be the worst. After that, it will just be a routine. Thank you for the reply and for the good wishes with the insurance issue. I'm not too worried bacause I'm having surgery either way, it would just be nice to save $15,000.

Not everyone has to do a pre-op diet. It all depends on your surgeon's requirements. Mine requires it because of a few of his patients over doing it and gaining 20-30 pounds before surgery and having complications. I'm sure your surgeon will let you know.

My surgeon requires an "Atkins/South Beach" style pre-op diet for 10-14 days before surgery. I'm starting mine tomorrow. Here's the info from the doctor's instructions. "The purpose of the diet is to use up the glycogen that is stored in the liver. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrates. Depleting your liver's glycogen stores shrinks the liver so it does not have to be moved so much during surgery." Wishing all of the other July surgeries a speedy recovery. Maria Open RNY 7/5/05

Janice. Hi . I 'm getting very nervous too . My liquid diet starts on the 28th. I sure hope I'm strong enough to be faithfull on this thing. I feel like my willpower is at an all time low.But I just have to keep telling myself that I can do this. Good luck and stay strong.I know you can do it.
