Topic: need to vent a little
first off if what im going to say is offensive to anyone i want to apologize before i start...... second i want to keep this entire post on myself i learned in A.A. to keep it in the I ... so here i go ........ i wanted to have weight loss surgery because i was tired of being winded i was tired of feeling depressed and not wanting to leave my house.... while i was researching it and going thru all the pre stuff all i heard is this is dangerous surgery "you know you could die" my very response was i am going to die without it so i have to give it a shot....... i am considered a lightweight with only 100 lbs to lose but still have demons like all of us seem to have....... i look upon this surgery as a do over in my life... i look at july 9th as a rebirthday. for myself.... i reached my goal in 9 months ... i refused to let my head get the best of me .... i attend support groups as regular as possible and it helps..... i also have become very aware of what i put into my body ...... i am no where near perfect and fall short sometimes but not till after i was at my goal for a while......i sometimes have to go back to square one and say to myself why did i have this surgery... its certainly not to gain weight.....i was told this is only a tool and at one point you have to make a decision to change your life...... ..i am hearing and reading posts on what did you eat and stuff like that ..... most things i read i havent even attempted to put in my mouth .....i rarely eat bread .... i havent had pasta in 2 yrs.... i miss it yes but love my new life much better.......sometimes we just have to go back to basics.... there is no way that after two years even that im even close to being able to eat what i used to ...the only difference is that i choose better things......... fruit lots of fruit....i use sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds to help with the bordum. so instead of trying to post what you ate every day try to sit back and reflect what you would be like without this precious tool that we were given...ask yourself why you had the surgery.... and think twice before you put anything in your mouth you might regret....i know it has helped me ..... ATTEND SUPPORT GROUPS...........I LOVE YOU ALL DEARLY YOU ARE MY JULY BABIES AND HATE THAT YOUR ALL STRUGGLING ........but i know for me i need to just get back to basics......i hope i didnt offend anyone.... Teah, Thank you for sharing this article!!! Now we know why most of our Bariatric groups emphasize on getting in your protein and limiting your carbs. The nutritionist always said not to worry about the fat grams (I was always worried since I eat a lot of cheese..lots of fat). So now we know a calorie is not a calorie. Mary

Topic: A calorie is a calorie?
Apparently not, according to this article from: http://www.jimmyakin.org/2005/07/a_calorie_is_a_.html July 06, 2005 A Calorie Is A Calorie Is A Calorie? (Jimmy Akin) In a prior post I wrote that "The form of the calories don't matter that much in and of themselves. A thousand calories of protein or fat or carbohydrates is still a thousand calories"? In saying that I was conceding an element of truth to a common dieting axiom: "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie." This axiom is often used by those who tout calorie restriction as the key to successful fat loss. These folks would say that it doesn't matter whether the calories you take in are in the form of fat, carbohydrates, or protein. All that counts for losing weight is losing calories. But while it's true (by definition) that one calorie represents as much energy as another calorie, that is much more to the story than this. As I went on to point out, the type of calories does have an effect on the body's metabolism because the body has to do different things in order to burn different macro-nutrients (i.e., protein, fat, and carbohydrates). If you change the ratio of the macro-nutrients you are eating, your body's metabolism changes in order to digest and/or store them. I'd like to document that now by citing a classic study published in 1956 by Alan Kekwick and Gaston Pawan ("Calorie Intake in Relation to Body Weight Changes in the Obese," Lancet, July 28, 1956, 155-161). These researchers divided their test subjects into three groups, each of which ate a thousand calories a day that were principally composed of one of the three macronutrients. One group got a thousand calories a day that were 90% carbohydrate calories, another got a thousand calories a day that were 90% protein calories, and the third group got a thousand calories a day that were 90% fat calories. If the "a calorie is a calorie" maxim applied to weight loss, these groups should have lost the same amount of weight--or at least approximately the same amount of weight. They didn't. The 90% protein group lost an average of .6 pounds per day of the study. The 90% fat group lost .9 pounds per day. And the 90% carbohydrate group actually gained .24 pounds per day. What explains this? The basic explanation is that your metabolism adjusts to the input you give it. If you put in primarily fat, it triggers one set of responses as your body gears up to utilize the fat and manage its energy output. If you put in carbs, it triggers a different set of respones. And if you put in protein, it triggers a third set. These have an impact on how much weight a person will lose. As the 1956 Kekwick study showed (and as subsequent studies have reinforced), if you give your body fat in the absence of carbohydrates then your body will go into fat burning mode. If you give it protein in the absence of carbohydrates then it will do the same, though the rate of fat burning will be less efficient. On the other hand, if you give it primarily carbohydrates then it will slam on the brakes for fat burning and start hoarding the fat it has, even slowing your metabolism so that it can generate excess calories to try to hoard more nutrients since the sudden absence of fat from your diet has convinced your body that some kind of famine is going on and you need to go into emergency survival mode.

Hey Nance!! I hope you feel better soon... Although I think not walking in the heat is probably a blessing. If New York is as hot as St. Louis is now... you missed a bullet. You can barely breath.. It's 100 degrees with 50% humidity! Take good care... there'll be other challenges... Denise :waves:

I just have to reply to this message. Thank you for the strong message, but the one thing I find with "Head Hunger" is to have a small taste of the chocolate cake (or whatever I'm craving) and it doesn't usually taste as good or it is all together going to make me sick and then I remember why I had this surgery!!!! Depriving myself just seems to make the "wanting" stronger and feed the self destroying thoughts. I've learned to make food a low priority- my old life revolved around it and I will not go there again. I've found that the surgery was alot more emotional than I ever realized it would be and that food is not as important as I once believed.

I've been trying to post and when I preview, it only show's half of the post, so now you're getting a condensed version. Of course it was a long post and I'm not feeling well, so I'm just going to check in. I didn't check in yesterday because I was so busy at work. I'm home sick today - I have a monster stomach/intestinal virus. I'm trying to keep hydrated and I just tried a soft boiled egg, but that went right through me. I'm so disappointed that I'll be missing my Corporate Challenge in Central Park, but there's no way I could walk 3.5 miles in the heat. I don't know what I'll eat later, but I know it will be light. Hugs to all, and congrats to all of you who are having such good days!! Nancy
