People worried you're getting too thin?

I had surgery in July and am down from 248 to 162 (5'8" tall) and a size 8 from a 20. I really want to weigh 145. BUT people are bothering me now about getting too thin. My boyfriend said I'm getting too bony (Hah! isn't that a scream!!!) and my mom keeps asking me if I'm eating. Dad said I needed to try not to lose any more. What's up with this??? Anyone else hear the same thing? Also, it's really slow now but it's still coming off at 1-2 lbs. a week. Does it stop on it's own? Amydoodle

My husband hears it all of the time. I'm not quite there yet. Hubby lost 190 pounds. He is 5'9 and weighs 175-180. He is considered "overweight" by his BMI, yet everyone tells him "not to lose one more pound". He wears a size medium shirt, size 34 or 35 pants. I think he looks like a hunk. Do what you want. Just stay healthy. If you lose a few more pounds, don't tell anyone--not their business, anyhow, right? I think 145 is very reasonable for your height, IMHO. Diana **I still need to lose ~30 before people tell me I look "too thin/boney".

Amy, First of all, congrats on your weight loss!!! You have come a long way in such a short amount of time, I hope that you are happy with your current success. I am having the same comments from people around me. I also had surgery in July, at 5' 10" I was at 320 and am now 175, which is a loss of 145 lbs. Since early February, everyone around me has been "on my case" that I am getting too thin. I see my surgeon next week, I am going to ask him about this same issue. I do not feel as I am getting too skinny but since everyone is concerned... I will get an md's answer to relay to those concerned. I think that if you are under a physician's care, he would voice any concerns that he has. I also think that with people who have had wls, the people surrounding us have been used to us being large people. They were used to us being "big and fat" and having no bone structure. And then when we lose all of those lbs, the people who have known us, start to see bones again. I think that is where the comments come from. They are so used to seeing us fat that they are not used to seeing us at the weight that we were supposed to be at. The concerns are genuine and heartfelt and will probably not be resolved until they go to the doctor with you and hear it from an "official" source. Just have your boyfriend, mom or dad go to the doctor's office with you and when your doctor says that it is safe for you to drop to a healthier weight, let the person ask any questions that they may have. That may put them more at ease and will allow them to relay this information with the rest of those who are concerned. Sorry this response was so long. And as a response to your final question, MOST of the time, yes it does stop on its own. Again, congrats and hang in there, you are doing great. John Haggerty

John I just peeked at your before/after photos---holey moley!! What a fantastic change you have made. Not only have you lost a bunch of weight, you look ten years younger, too. I agree with what you said above about the rapid weight loss, and how those closest to us are not used to the changes in our bodies. Great idea to get the official word from the doc. Maybe even have him write a statement to keep in your pocket?? Just me, but I think it would be funny if someone told me I was"too thin", and then pulled out a slip from my doc stating it was OK for me to lose down to "xxx" pounds. Just wanted to say congrats on your success, and you look mahvelous! Diana

Geez, I only wish I could hear I was too thin! I have about 43 more pounds *at least* before that happens! That would put me at 188 and 5'10". But, you know what Amy, it is up to you! Lose what you're comfortable with and what your doc says is healthy! You had this surgery for you!!! I personally will LOVE the day when I hear "you're TOO thin!" Who'da thunk it? Take good care, Jeff 338/231/188 -107

I am hearing the same thing constantly from husband... He is very worried the weight lose will continue and I will end up being a Twiggy (with big hips...which is what I was in high school.) My understanding is that for the majority of people it stops on it's own. There are some who do experience problems.... Anne

Thanks everyone for your answers and support. I did a lot of thinking over the last day and I think I'm looking pretty good and making some people a little nervous. My BF is overweight and I think he'd like me to be overweight with him. My mom had surgery in August and has lost 60 lbs. but still has a long way to go. She has stalled and is pretty complascent with it. I need to get back on track and not listen to these people! I drank my water, ate my all bran cereal and had a protein shake today like I'm supposed to. Those extra 20 lbs. are gonna come off! Like it or not, boney or not, I will be happier and healthier!!! I hear it a lot now. People started coming up and asking me if I was sick. My parents, who just found out about my surgery, are insisting that I not lose any more weight. And, as parents, they worry that I won't be able to stop. My husband is missing some of my more entertaining padding. You can imagine which two areas. I still see fat spots that need to be slimmed down even more. So, I am not going to actively try not to lose any more. But, since I am at goal, I am going to try and not be as so hung up on losing each week. I changed my goal and would like lose up to another 20 pounds but no more. What ever I do, I am not going to admit to trying to lose any more. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that your not the only one. Hat 256/150 as of 2 weeks ago and really curious what I am now
